Re: KB1 1948

I did some digging in one of the forums (searched for oil filter) and found a picture of one. Mine does not have this cannister, so no oil filter. Guess I'll be taking the pan off. Also the side covers look like they are leaking also. Looking at the lubrication chart, think I will spend the winter lubeing it up!
Thanks for your responses. I will use 15-40 oil.

Re: KB1 1948

I was talking to K2 owner thinking out loud about plumbing a remote oil filter to his 214 engine. There was remote filter on the 4.3 I salvaged from s10 4x4 for my K1. Possibly more common than I am aware.

Re: KB1 1948

I would recommend Rotella for the oil, it still has the proper additive in it for flat tappet cams, as the 214 has that, modern car oils are now set-up for roller cams and do not have the correct additive to protect the flat tappets.

Which Rotella product do you recommend, Bill??

Re: KB1 1948

Patrick's Antique Performance, recommends Valvoline Racing Oil VR 15W 50,in flat tappet engines, since it still incorporates zinc, added to the oil. As a secondary precaution,he also recommends ZDD additive. I Religiously changed my oil, every 1,000 miles, following his advice. Mind you,it was a '55 Chevy 2-ton,but flat tappet,(261,S.C.O.,No oil filter)),nonetheless. Foolishly,i followed the advice,of a "fellow member",and used conventional motor oil. 30 miles after that oil change,my truck broke-down,caused by excessive crankcase pressure.I had it towed back home, and started it,and let it warm-up several times before I sold it.The 2nd owner(after I sold it,First owner didn't even Drive IT)!,drove it two blocks, before a rod started knocking! It locked-up a mile later! He couldn't complain! The guy was broke,so he took $1,500.00 for it! First thing I did, when i got my KB3,was give it a PROPER oil change! I've heard the same thing about Rotella Diesel, but haven't tried it. Here's a video of it,('55 Chebby 2nd-Series 6500 2-Ton), running, after I installed a new wiring harness...http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/willy ... 4.html?o=0

Re: KB1 1948

Bill, are you recommending Rotella 15-40 diesel? That is what I use in my '03 7.3.
Thanks
Dave

Re: KB1 1948

I Heard Rotella (Diesel-formulated oil),works just as well as the Valvoline, not sure of (Rotella's), viscosity. probably doesn't matter? I'm sticking to Valvoline,(PLUS ZDD Additive),since that's what Patrick and his son,Phil recommend, for all flat-tappet engines. Just My opinion... I'm NO Expert!

Re: KB1 1948

my father used to use Rotella in his diesel, then switched to Amsoil. He likes the Amsoil better. don't know what weight he uses.

Re: KB1 1948

Was out yesterday and stopped by O Riley's and asked about ZDD and the bottle for an oil change was $18.00. Seems quite high to me. 5 quarts of oil will be less than that.

Re: KB1 1948

The guy that rebuilt my motor is very good . He had me use break in motor oil , Joe Gibbs I think [CRS] . and follow up with the Valvoline racing motor oil ,neither is cheap but I think his advise on these old motors is the best I can get .My motor is a BD 308 from the 50's , has flat tappets and was used to the zinc elixir available at the time . By the way , really nice truck , what a find you have to be pretty happy about that .
