Re: My 1949 KB-1

After taking a summer break, its time to get back work. The bed is next on the list to finish so after hours of blocking it was time to shoot some color.

After paint I applied 3M Weatherstrip adhesive to hold the fender welt in place during assembly, mounted the fenders, spare tire bracket , and lights.

Here's a few more shots. The tailgate is next; its ugly. Bent every way but straight. We'll see.

Re: My 1949 KB-1

You are making great progress. I never considered gluing the fender welt on. I see the floor is none existent. You going metal or wood? I laid a piece of 14 ga tin for floor in my box. Had the sheet metal shop bend a roll pan into it for me. That said I would likely go with wood now just for a more vintage look.

Re: My 1949 KB-1

Gonna go with wood. The plan is to buy the strips and either use some cherry I have or buy another species, I have an idea in my head but I'll know for sure when I see it. Mar-K Products has the proper cut profiles listed online so It is just a matter of dragging out the table saw and doing it myself. Got to get past the tailgate first and get it mounted so I can get exact dimensions. I like the wood look too.

Re: My 1949 KB-1

I looked it up to make sure I have the correct info and its iron wood , sometimes called brazillian walnut , dense enough so it won't float . It's being used for decking and is pretty available . for your truck , not as much cost , for mine , I want to go with 5/4 and it being around 13ft is a lot . I looked at cost and 5to 6 bucks for 3/4 a bd ft and 7 to 8 bucks for 5/4 a lin.ft. but we used it on a stake body for a construction company and it just lasts and lasts . I'm thinking of getting some downed oak logs and taking them to a sawyer and having them cut , downed oak is usually wormey and I really like it .

Re: My 1949 KB-1

Ok sure. I've seen that on bedwood sites under their exotic woods, just never heard heard it referred to as iron wood. White oak is the go-to choice for working trucks around here, lots of it available. I'm going for a certain look and knotty hickory has the grain I'm thinking I'd like. Downs and Reader has a warehouse not far from here and I think I'll go see what they have. I'll know it when I see it. Pretty sure they offer planing and sanding services so I'm hoping that will cut down work on my end. Not really concerned with durability for a show truck.
