2020 Gatornationals (reprise)

As we travel, it is nice to comment about where we are going and/or where we have been and all the IHC trucks that we have seen on our journeys.

2020 Gatornationals (reprise)

In March of this year, as everyone is now familiar, Coronavirus shut everything down. On the day the message came out for everyone to lock themselves in quarantine, it was a Thursday and the Gatornationals were just in their first day. Everyone loaded up and went home and the racing was not finished. None of the “pro classes” ever made it to the starting line. Fast forward 6 months and they are trying now to finish what didn’t happen then. So today - Thursday - I’m back in Gainesville and the completion of the Gatornationals is taking place. Today is staging day and everyone is getting in place and preparing for three days of action. Since there are no spectators yet and all the vehicles are not all in the Hot Rod Junction (car show), I got a couple pics of the IH. (Yes I have my face mask(s) and plan to be very shy when it comes to spectators. I just hope the spectators are just as shy and keep their distance.)

Not sure what pics would be of interest to all the shut-ins.
I’ll start with something so new it’s one of a kind and still being dialed in by the engineers at Ford. I was walking around and found myself staring at a new Mustang that just didn’t fit the usual mold. It was parked in the pits for Bob Itasca Racing. A chassis tech saw me staring and started telling me about this new beast. Would you believe four 800volt ac motors with inverters. He didn’t tell me how much torque it made, but said it made over 1500hp, did the quarter mile in about 8 seconds going in the neighborhood of 170mph. The part that is still being dialed in is the delivery of the torque to the wheels. The delivery of instantaneous torque is too much, too soon. So they are trying different techniques to phase that torque to the rear end to maximize the effectiveness. Electric cars are the new kid on the block and there are still areas to be fully understood. They develop instantaneous torque whereas internal combustion powered engines make their torque, although fairly rapidly at wide open throttle, it’s not like the electric motor which delivers its torque at about 100% almost instantly.
The tech told me that driving this car is a totally new experience because all the sounds are different. One example he told me about is the sound the parachute makes when it pops open. In traditional cars, that sound is obscured by other sounds but this car doesn’t have those sounds and drivers are hearing new sounds never experienced.

Good see to NHRA back in action. I watched them this afternoon, were you there today? Cool to see Swap Rat 14 paint scheme in the winner circle today. Was hoping Leah could stop it, but the Capco Boys are tough to beat.

Re: 2020 Gatornationals (reprise)

I was there until around 12:30. The day was cloudy and intermittent drizzle, so they gave us the OK to depart. From that point on I don’t know what happened. Apparently they managed to get the racing completed. My drive from the race track to home is about 3 hrs. Most of the time I like to drive my truck to shows, but because it is parked on display for multiple days, I trailer it to the Gatornationals so that I can leave it parked and then I have a way to get to the hotel, eat, etc. I don’t know if FOX used the video or not, but my truck and several of the cars were videoed for fill-in during the broadcast. My wife recorded the two broadcasts and when I have time to watch 5 hours of recorded TV I’ll see if it ever made it on air. A buddy emailed me that it was on YouTube, but I haven’t searched for it yet. There were 15 vehicles on display and my truck was the only truck. The rest were cars or rail dragsters.

I watched pretty close to all 5 hrs of it & didn't see your truck. Was watching for it, but I did have a 20 minute nap. Maybe it was on when I was out?

Re: 2020 Gatornationals (reprise)

I received word that it was showing up on YouTube since FOX didn’t air it. The only video I’ve found is from last year (2019) when we were located adjacent to the finish line. There were 30 or so vehicles in the Hot Rod Junction (car show). Hopefully the link below will take you to that video and the guy videoing actually deviated from the way he was recording to take an extra look at my truck. My truck appears about 7:00 minutes or so into the video. You can watch that segment or as much of his video as you’d like.
