ZENITH CARB

Trying to figure out if Zenith 23-AV-10 & Zenith 28-AV-10 carburetors are interchangeable. What does the 23 or 28 indicate?
Thanks,
-Snowman.

Re: ZENITH CARB

Maybe ;)

Physically, yes.

The type 23 is an older design. The type 23 design was superseded by the type 28, and the type 28 was superseded by the type 228.

The "A" means choke and throttle shafts are in the same plane.

The "V" means vacuum power circuit.

The "10" is an S.A.E. size 2 physical size.

HOWEVER:

Each come in several different internal venturii sizes, such that the carbs may be used on engines of varying displacements. Each will have a round tag approximately the size of a dime riveted to the body of the carburetor. There should be two sets of numbers in a circle on the tag. The outer number would be the O.E. number (eg. the I.H.C. part number) and the inner number would be the Zenith number. Looking up the Zenith number in the Zenith Master Parts book would give the internal venturi size.

And while the carbs MAY be interchangeable as a complete unit, MOST internal parts, including gaskets are NOT interchangeable.

Adjustment is also different. The type 23 has an inverse idle circuit (clockwise for rich, counter-clockwise for lean).

The type 28 is an technological upgrade from the type 23.
