Helicoil Kits?

So I've heard of using helicoils to repair damaged threads for years and years, but have never had the need to actually use them... until now. The thermostat housing gasket around the rear bolt was leaking after driving several miles, so I "snugged" it up a bit, and you guessed it... the bolt started getting "easier" to move. ****. Can I get away with a helicoil kit at this location or will I have to tap the head for the next largest size bolt?

Re: Helicoil Kits?

Heli coil should work and give about 95% of the original strength. It is a good repair.

Re: Helicoil Kits?

Just as a follow-up... Used the Helicoil kit (they include a ton of Helicoils, and installer and a tap) and everything worked out perfectly. No more thermostat housing leak!
