Pertronix in D2?

Have any of you installed a Pertronix ignition in your D-2 trucks? What experience have you had with them? What kit number?

Thanks,

John

Oh! You like to tap on the wasp nest!
I LOVE Pertronix. It rocks! I would bring a second one on a long trip, though! :)
I put these ignitions on the oscilloscope before and after and Pertronix just "covers up" so many ills. It'll even cover up some carb issues.
I've had several go out without warning. One tow truck ride and lots of ridicule (I'm a professional mechanic).

Interesting about carrying a spare - do they fizzle randomly, after so much time? so many miles?

I should have mentioned that I have the Delco 622-R distributor and the truck is still 6V positive.

If you are adventurous Supra/ Cressida straight six ignition parts can be put in your distributor. You end up with a very "hot" Toyota ignition system. You gotta swap to 12v, though.

But can you use their 6V positive kit with the stock distributor?

Re: Pertronix in D2?

On the HD/ GRD I've seen two types of distributors.
One of these has a tiny cap. Not much space inside the dist.
The other has the larger cap. Both are six cylinder flatheads.
Plenty of space under the LARGER cap. The small one, I don't know.
Yes, I think there's a kit. I'm usually doing 12v. Don't know much about 6v aftermarket stuff.

I have the Pertronix 6 volt positive ground unit under the small cap of my distributor. Works great.
You won't regret it.

Tony,

Is your truck a stock D-2? I finally got a response from Pertronix and they are telling me that they do not make a kit for the 622R distributor?

Re: Pertronix in D2?

I think that is true. I found Pertronix for just about everything else, but there does not seem to be one available for the D-2. I frankly am a bit dubious of them anyway and am trying to keep the old style in good shape with an extra set of points in the glove box. Stickman 207

Re: Pertronix in D2?

John, Yes I have a stock HD engine with the 622R distributor. I have had the Pertronix unit under the cap for many years and have never had a problem with it. Engine runs nice and smooth. I had a spare 622R sitting around so I fitted the Pertronix 1166P6 unit. It was not a straight fit and I had to modify the the unit to make it fit.
I have the original 622R with the points ready to go if required, but as the 622R with the Pertronix looks stock I have never needed it.
I use the solid copper plug leads with no resistor plugs and the original 6 volt positive ground system.
