All the "S" means is sealed (or shielded),period. Some have a seal on both sides,some just one,some seals are metal,some plastic it depends on the mfr. I know for a fact the IH ST527 & ST518 were sealed on both sides with plastic shields. The ST516 was the same as the 518 but only one side sealed. For that reason we only stocked the 518.
When using a bearing with only one side sealed the open side goes towards the flywheel but even that is no guaranty dirt won't get into the bearings in time.
For the cost of a pilot bearings v. the cost,time and aggravation of having to do it all over again because a bearing failed...
