1938 IH DS30

I have made the true barn find up in Montana, brought it home to Northern NV. A 1938 IH DS30 flatbed grain truck with nary a dent or scratch, no rust, just barn sour as it sat for about 70 yrs...23,000 miles on odometer. The brakes (shoes) are near new however I am replacing the brake lines and master cylinder (Wagner Lockheed FE800 A). Anyone know where I can find a kit or replacement master cylinder, also the wheel cylinder rubber needs replacing. Removing the brake lines is proving to be a challenge.

Also looking for tips on placing the dual wheels with new tires on the wheel hub in correct balance. Truck does not run at this time but should not be a problem once I am ready. Any ideas to make this process easier would be appreciated. The truck is red with black fenders.

Thanks, Bill Jonkey

I bought a MASTERCOOL HYDRAULIC flaring tool, 15 years ago. The prices for this unit have been just under $200 to nearly $700. Shop around.
This flaring tool works correctly every time.

I used the casting number and came up with this...

http://www.fme-cat.com/overlays/part-de ... brandId=WB

Raybestos
MC2657

Bill,
You'd get more replies when looking for parts etc. by posting in the 1940 and older section. I only found this to see what Brian was replying to.

Also one thing that may help is a set of flare nut wrenches . I didn't get a set untill I was putting it all back together but they would really help taking it apart .

Scottso...thanks so much for the assistance...in looking at the MC2652 it does not appear to match my FE800. The 800 has three bolt holes on the side for mounting on a bracket attached to the frame.

Re: 1938 IH DS30

Well Bill, I tried. Without the IH pn or parts manual for that truck there's not much to go on. Using a casting number is never a sure fire way to find wheel or master cylinders,in many cases all it does is ID the casting itself which can be bored to different sizes and/or have different ports sizes.
I did try the book for the K/KB and by the illustration (K-4&5) it may be the same MC(?). Bad thing is,the page with the pn for a complete MC is not there. I tried a few aftermarket online catalog's for either but only found rebuild kits,1 for a K5 with a hydro-vac and one without. Both numbers rang a bell so I checked a list I've compiled and found both. The app. I noted for one is the R-130 w/hydro-vac and the illustration shows 3 side mounting holes,so it's a strong possibility it's the same MC. This sent me back to the illustration's in the K book and the R book to match the internal pn's,which match perfectly. That raises the probability it's the same as yours greatly.
I say that because the MC used on lighter trucks was used from the D's,K's all the way to the 50's S-series,although that one has only 2 side mounting holes.
Now more bad news, I have searched for at least a year for an aftermarket pn for the one MC and there's just doesn't seem to be one.
That's not really a big issue though, you can rebuild yours as long as the bore is good. If not the only recourse I'm aware of is having it sleeved.
So here's the likely kit pn's;
With 1-1/4" bore
121400H IH
TM3613 Dorman 1
MK1 Raybestos
MK3613 Wagner

With 1-1/2" bore
121401HB IH
MK39 Raybestos
MK3622 Wagner

Here's link's for 2 reputable sleeving vendors just in case.

Re: 1938 IH DS30

What an awesome find! I happened to find one just like it about a year ago. I haven't confirmed it quite yet, but it's registered as a 1941 D30.

The picture was taken a few months ago when I was getting a load of wood chips for my parents house. The truck was running great, took the load with ease, and didn't do any damage to the already beat up wood bed. Since I haven't gotten to begin restoring it I figured I may as well use it for what it was intended to do.
