Weird D Series

Never seen this one before!
Won't pass smog!
Rare body, completely different from my D-2 panel.

Those pictures give more questions than answers--

I can barely make it out, but doesn't the hub cap in the first pic say GMC? Maybe it's two different vehicles combined? Or maybe the hub cap just happened to fit?

But what on earth are those guys doing? And what does it have to do with newspapers?

Short story. I've seen this equipment before. You probably have, too!
During the second arab oil embargo in the 70s we had folks in our area driving on wood gas. It used this crazy arrangement to power vehicles and it works.
I've seen WWII pics where people and armies using it.
Driving behind one of these things was awful. They stunk to high heaven. Basically whatever they could find to burn made a vapor that could be burned in an engine.
This must be WWII. Gas rationing. Gotta deliver those papers!
The guys are wearing gas masks because it stinks.
That's why I said it wouldn't pass smog!

Sorry, came from same series of pics. Shows filter to remove cinders? This truck is obviously not a D.

Those pictures are here in Victoria Australia and that newspaper is still our daily Rag.

The units were Gas Producers and this will explain it all.

That explains it. Thanks, Trevor. i thought I was looking at a California WWII era truck. Didn't look right to me..

2 different trucks, look at roofline above doors and running boards.... very cool pics!!!

D series has rounded corners on the doors. This truck does not have those. Weird.
