KINGPIN Removal 1940 D15

1940 d15, just need to know how to remove the kingpins.. any info is appreciated.. I was going to have the spindles turned to fit a disc brake hub of some sort then find a rearend with same bolt pattern, unless someone knows of an application that will allow a modern day hub disc to fit(then i wont remove the kingpins), I am making this a daily driver, saved from the shredder, but i want something that will run 70mph down the interstate.... thanks again.. JT

Re: KINGPIN Removal 1940 D20

Hello JT!
How 'bout some pics?
Gotta see a D-20. Never seen one of those before.
Full floating rear end with dual rear wheels or single wheels all around?
I feel your pain on the fwy friendly thing.
Tell us your story of how you beat the recycler out of your truck.
Thanks, Don

Re: KINGPIN Removal 1940 D15

That would be my rookie mistake..haha.. make it a d15 (had to go look at the title) yes, it has single wheels all around and a full floater rearend. I was at the local bone yard in february looking for a radiator, when i seen a backhoe pulling this old girl by, all four wheels locked, tires shredded and peeling apart, pushing mud and slush with the body like a grader blade... I couldnt take my eyes off of it, i went a looked at it, crawled underneath.. then asked the yardmaster there.. "whats the story with that old international" he told me that it has been back in the back since 1979, and had trees growing around it, they recently dozed trees and were taking the old trucks and scrap to the crusher.. I was floored, I felt it had some life left in it..... looked at it again on my way out... got 2 miles down the road and turned around... asked if he would be willing to sell.. thats when he said that he had the title for it... long story a little shorter, i bought it for a little more than scrap would have made him... know here I am, my 5 year old daughter excited and helping me like i was with my dad and his old chevy's when i was growing up..

So, put front axle up on jackstands, chock rear wheels.
Remove front wheels.
Remove or cut brake hoses.
Locate pins or bolts on axle that hold kingpins in.
Bolts I back off nuts and slap with a hammer. Once bolt backs out you can remove.
Pins just knock out with appropriate punch or nail!
Block with wood under drums.
You can elect to remove tie rod and draglink.
Using punch just knock kingpins out. If the plugs are in place, just punch right through them.
I start with a smaller punch in the middle of the kingpin. Once kingpin starts moving you can decide if you want to move to a bigger punch.
Keep body parts out from under drums, spindles, tie rod, etc.

Re: KINGPIN Removal 1940 D15

You gotta figure out what the door said. And what does it say above door?
There's atleast one other D-15 here. You can search it.
Rear axle swap is a piece of cake.
Front hub/ brake / axle / spindle swap or mod is something different.
I have no idea if say a D-2 spindle will work or if your spindle or hub can be modified.
Maybe easier to do front axle swap?
One thing to keep in mind is that IHC frames are wider than most anything else this year.
SOOO, it's possible spring to axle mounting pads on these trucks is wider than say a Ford or Chevy.
I think MUST II isn't hard to install on this one.

Marshall Powell
Macomb ILL .... Is on the door,

Re: KINGPIN Removal 1940 D15

On my K-1 i had to clean dirt to find where roll pin went. If it has this kind the pin is tiny. Like 1/8 inch.
Yeah! patina
