36 IHC C-30 steering link

Anybody know what one supposed to looks like? I have mine but it has a large (almost halfway thru) and medium rub/wear spot next to it. The spots are about 3/4 length from one end. In the middle of that wear/rub spot is a bend. Maybe 15 degrees. Every other steering link I have seen for these years (mostly C-1's) are completely straight. Mine is to dangerous to use and I haven't had any luck finding a replacement. I can build a new one but I'd really like to know if it is suppose to be straight or have a bend and if it does have a bend. At what angle. Thanks a bunch.

Well, I can't say for sure what a C-30 has but my 36 C-40 has what looks like 3 bends in it. It looks like it is bent to provide more clearance to the tire when turning. It basically goes straight back for almost half the length, then down and in, then back out and up to the steering box arm. It is a different part number than the one on the C-30, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was bent also. I can post some pics if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing here. But I'm betting my bend is also for tire clearance. I'm going to go mock it up and check. Thanks. Pictures are always helpful.

Okay, here's some less than great pics but they should show what you need.

Inside tire tread matches the bend/rub/wear spot. How weird that almost 1/2 the bar is worn away. Thanks for the pictures. A C-30 is definitely different but same concept.

It doesn't show up too well in the picture, but yeah, mine shows a wear spot too. Not bad enough to worry about yet, but definitely something I need to keep in mind. Someone must have made a lot of hard left turns in your truck! It looks like there are some adjustable stops that should prevent this. I just haven't gotten around to looking at that yet. Too many other things to fix first 8-)

Still haven't been able to solve this problem yet. Asked a guy on ebay over a year about selling one off a C-30 parts tuck. Said he wasn't parting out pieces. Tried again last week because the truck is still listed. Oh, that's been sold. Just my luck. I have some material to jig up my own but welding on old steering components doesn't invoke warm fuzees in my heart and soul. I know there is a solution. I just haven't stubbled on it yet. Finally found a replacement axle shaft by spotting some in a picture where a guy had a rim for sale. Ended up with a 20x8 NOS rim that I can't use but maybe I can use it for trade or an expensive flower pot. But I got the missing axle shaft.

Just for giggles. The steering link is 23.25" between the ball studs and is clocked at 6 o'clock at the steering hub and 9 o'clock at the steering box if sitting in the driver's seat. It may or may not have a bend in it. I have one from a C-1 which is similar but longer in length. Here's hoping. :t3909:
