Copper Head Gasket

I need some help with the installation of my copper head gasket. I installed it a few years ago, now I have the engine in place and I filled the radiator up. Over night the antifreeze seeped out between the head gasket. I took the head off and cleaned everything up, but I am wondering if I should use the red high heat liquid gasket on both sides of the copper head gasket.

Anyone out there had this issue?

I though at first that I over torqued the head, but the gasket is not squished. I torqued the head to 80 foot pounds, i thought that may be too much.

This is a 1926 S-26 IHC, the 6 cyl engine. I purchased the gasket from Olson gaskets in the US so it is good quality.

Have you given any thought to asking Olson?
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have

I'd run until it got up to temp, let it cool, back the headbolts off 1/4 turn in sequence and re-torque. That used to be std procedure before non-retorque gaskets.

Re: Copper Head Gasket

The head was saturated with antifreeze, I didn't want to start it and score the cylinder walls.

I took the head back off, cleaned it all and ready to reinstall the head gasket.

I saw that there's a copper spray gasket to coat it both sides before install, any thoughts on this product?

I use copper-coat all the time and have never ever had a failure. I'm sure you know that copper can work harden and how to return it to a soft state for use also.

Re: Copper Head Gasket

Not sure what your saying about the hardened copper, are you referring to heating it up before installing it?

The gasket is new, I haven't started the engine yet. Its been sitting for a bit, just got the frame and panels painted.

Re: Copper Head Gasket

Wouldn't go anymore than 80ft/lb as they will only be mild steel studs.

Spray it with copper coat. I had same problem with mine when I first started it, used coppercoat and no issues since.

Re: Copper Head Gasket

I put two coats of spray on the gasket, installed it and torqued to 80 lbs. Seems to have stopped the leak. Started the truck but it wouldn't stay running, tore the carb back off and the gasket I put in it a few years ago has deteriorated. I'm making a new one with an improved gasket material for fuel.

Re: Copper Head Gasket

If it is the float cover gasket. Make sure to leave the 2 vent holes uncovered, they are the 2 ridges on the brass cover
