Re: 26 IH Bed design

It is worth repeating, you appear to be a skilled craftsman.
Those license plates are from our side of the border. Saskatchewan is a flyover for important people from Ottawa and England and those guys seem to run out of interest by the time they get to Stampede City because we never see them here on The Wet Coast either.
The 6 o'clock news showed that the PM was here last week. He must be feeling desperate, with the upcoming election looming, if he visited BC.
We are watching the Duffy trial. I think that a few of those guys must be worried now that they are being exposed.

Well I'm an Ottawa boy, but if you want a vehicle that isn't rusted out from the excessive salt used in the winter, you have to go out to Saskatchewan.

This is the box, so far. Still lots of work ahead, but its coming together.
I reused the under rails, and I was able to salvage and incorporate one rail that still has the Wagon manufacture stamp on it.

I do like what you're showing us!! :yay: :yay: And that's quite a wood working shop I see around that bed. Some really nice looking machines for making saw dust!!

Wow some fantastic carpentry skills it looks fantastic love the way you saved the old board and incorporated it into the new.
I am not a chippy and am just wondering on the joins in your sides would they not have been better the other way around so the water can not gather in them. I know with my tray/bed how much it grows and shrinks depending on the seasons and the gaps open and close ever so slightly.

Like I always say, sometimes, "There is nothing like a little bit of wood." Very nice.

Re: 26 IH Bed design

We were looking at the air flow when driving, if the tongues were placed in the upward direction, we figured the air flow would carry moisture up into the grove and stay wet for a while if I was caught in the rain. With the groves reversed, the water will accumulate and drain out the channels towards the front when braking and the rear when driving. This is something myself and the cabinetmakers discussed for a bit and figured we would give this a try. (I'm hoping my theory work). Were not anticipating too much expansion and contraction on the White Oak, the unit will be torn apart, coated twice, reassembled and coated two more times to ensure a good seal. We will be using the same clear finish material we use on the Kayak's. I don't plan on taking the truck out of the garage if its going to rain, don't want any damage to the wood if I can help it.

The shop looks good, lots of equipment because its the carpentry shop at the college were I teach. I have access to just about any type of equipment I need.

I could not find any tailgate hinges I liked, so I made my own, took a lot of heat to profile the 1/4" cold rolled steel, but it looks hand forged. I beat the heck out of it with a big hammer.

I still have lots of work ahead, I have to make the rear corner brackets to keep the sides from flexing outwards, profile the bottom cross members and round over the balance of the edges now that the corner steel is fitted. Then take it all apart and sand all the board and coat.

Re: 26 IH Bed design

I'm thinking I will use the stake side rails and brackets and make a stake side bed for the 1925 international, then it will have a look of its own. I'm not fond of the grain boxe that's on it now. This way I can use all the components I took off the 26

Looking good I noticed you chamfered all edges on the timber that is a must if you are going to show it as I know nearly the first thing people do is put there hand on the timber and have a feel and at least no splinters.

When you get a chance can you put up some sizes of the bed so if in future anyone else needs to make one they will have a starting point.

Re: 26 IH Bed design

These are the drawings I drew up for the box, I have although altered a few things to suite the side rail brackets when they arrived.

I did dimension the bed to suite the running boards, the outside of the box is inline with the inside of the running boards so the fenders would flow through.
