We were looking at the air flow when driving, if the tongues were placed in the upward direction, we figured the air flow would carry moisture up into the grove and stay wet for a while if I was caught in the rain. With the groves reversed, the water will accumulate and drain out the channels towards the front when braking and the rear when driving. This is something myself and the cabinetmakers discussed for a bit and figured we would give this a try. (I'm hoping my theory work). Were not anticipating too much expansion and contraction on the White Oak, the unit will be torn apart, coated twice, reassembled and coated two more times to ensure a good seal. We will be using the same clear finish material we use on the Kayak's. I don't plan on taking the truck out of the garage if its going to rain, don't want any damage to the wood if I can help it.
The shop looks good, lots of equipment because its the carpentry shop at the college were I teach. I have access to just about any type of equipment I need.
I could not find any tailgate hinges I liked, so I made my own, took a lot of heat to profile the 1/4" cold rolled steel, but it looks hand forged. I beat the heck out of it with a big hammer.
I still have lots of work ahead, I have to make the rear corner brackets to keep the sides from flexing outwards, profile the bottom cross members and round over the balance of the edges now that the corner steel is fitted. Then take it all apart and sand all the board and coat.
