Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

I beleive your right about the engine being a 259 Cornbinder. I actually have a cutaway diagram of the engine in my manual. If you look closely you can see the cylinders are indeed wet sleaves. Thanks for the Identification!

Its great that you snatch up Binder parts before they get scraped Smog. I wish I would have taken the opportunity to bring a couple of K series trucks home when I had the chance. Unfortunately those trucks are looooong gone. It seems when you think you should purchase an item you don't and when you dont think you should purchase you do and have buyers regret. :|

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

When my father purchased the truck he received not only the owners manual ,but also a "List of Parts for Special Equipment" catalog. It seems as the 5 speed trans curently in my truck was a factory option from the 4 speed trans shown in the owners manual. This again make me wonder if the four speed used in the D-35 is anything close to what is used in the smaller and larger K series trucks as far as spline size and ect. ???? Aditionally, if a T-98 can be adapted easily to a larger K series truck would a then be a realativly easy swap into a Larger D series?????? Any Ideals?????

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

Here is a picture of the four speed found in the owners manual and the five speed "which my truck has "found in the "Special Parts Catalog". If you notice on the diagram of the 5 speed trans it says at the top that this trans was meant for D-40 Trucks ????

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

I scrounge this stuff everyday like my life depended on it and I've never come across the five speed.
I spent some time researching the IHC 4 speed no synchro and found that most truck manufacturers used their own version of this trans. Obviously input and output shafts were usually different.
I have no doubt that you could make one of the no-synchro four speeds work in your truck.
However, if it's time to swap, you gotta go more modern.
Your driving experience will expand tremendously.
But I think that time is way off.
So, I'm confused. Is your trans 4 or 5 speeds?

Yes it has a five speed in place, but shows in the owners manuel as a 4 speed.I assume the original fire department ordered it that way judging by the options catalog included with the truck. The fith gear is actually a direct drive that couples the input directly to the out put. Couldn't really tell you the differences between gear ratios of the 4 and 5 speed trans.

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

That's a unusual truck, I think. Five speed and bigger engine than what the IHC Archives stated? 259 vs 241.
Low mileage, to boot.
That's a keeper.
So even the five speed version has no synchros?
I gotta find my old greenback motors manuals.

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

241 vs 259 is like the 250 vs 269 in the BLD series. same engine, different sleeve and piston) (bore size) It was the base vs optional engine. Most all got the bigger liners if the ever needed rebiulding anyway. Only way to tell is to open them up and measure to be sure.
5 speed is like the one in the K6's and -7's

So, CB, are those 5 speeds non-synchro?

Re: 1939 D-35 Engine and Trans

Thanks for the additional info CB. If I so happen to stumble across any of those trucks II'L make sure to check them out for parts. Until then I'm just going to run it like it is and maybe throw in some Lucas additive for good measure.
