Clutch 1927 Lycoming

When we did the restoration on the old girl we didn't split the gearbox as everything was working fine (bad mistake) we have now done about 900 miles and when at Dubbo a few months back and driving back from a road run all of a sudden we heard a bang from the clutch area and from then on it was very hard to get gears. I have not really had time to look at it but I went to move the truck to get it ready for this weekends truck show and the only way to move it was to start it in gear and then switch it off put it in reverse and start it again, so bit the bullet and pulled it apart and this is what I found.

Like a boxer in a ring I think its missing a tooth.

No sign of it being in their at all it must have been put back together at some stage with it missing.

Clutch plate was nearly down to the rivets also

Pressure plate was scored up also

Flywheel face was real good

Luckily in amongst all the bits I have gathered where 2 complete clutch's one still on an engine and one sitting it the box with the engines so we have been able to swap it over I now have a working clutch still haven't taken it for a run but will try it out today and then load up for tomorrows truck show.

Been busy with work but everything is so dry here it will be a very short cutting season and its looking like a very bad year for fires.

Sorry for the bad luck! Drives home the inspiration to collect those spare parts when we see them available. Hope your drought changes for the better. MM

Mike

you sure are spot on about collecting spares as you cant buy these parts at the corner shop anymore.

The clutch works great now with no more gear grinding with the changes. Just ticked over 900 miles since the restoration was finished.

Trevor,
Glad you have your clutch repaired and you are back on the road!
Wow you have certainly been putting that truck over the road since you finished the restoration.

Bill
It still does a few miles on the back of my tilt tray but I do enjoy getting it out and dirty whenever I can no use just storing it in the shed and not letting others enjoy it as well.
The best part I like is when at a show and the children have all been told by their parents Don't touch, then when they get to my truck I say you can hop in if you like and they look at the parents with that can I look and then the smiles come on and the faces light up.

Will be taking it to http://www.castlemainetruckshow.com/cts/ show this weekend it mainly for the new shiny bling trucks/rigs but they are starting to get a few old ones joining in and as this year is the first time it hasn't clashed with our major club event thought we might go they have a street parade on the Sunday morning which I am looking forward too.
