Are you looking for a period correct compressor or will any belt drive do?

It sure is quiet in here. Anybody? Who turned out the lights?

Re: Wanted Air Compressor

I have a friend that needed and air compressor for his mobile welding shop, so he took and auto air conditioner compressor and put a filter on the inlet and the exhaust goes through a check valve and into a tank. He then sets the throttle on his truck to 1000RPM's and says it will run any of his air tools that he has. Sounds like a cheap fix for a truck compressor.

Re: Wanted Air Compressor

Auto air conditioner compressors have NO OIL RINGS so will quickly pass oil from their crankcase to the outlet air. Not only does this gum up the air equipment but if the oil is not replaced, will lock up the compressor in short order. Another problem is the airconditoner compressor is designed to be cooled by the returning freon and are made without any provision for external cooling. The compressor will over heat in short order. I have seen converted AC compressors with finned head and I assume pistons with an oil groove cut in them for air compressors. I think by the time you've done all that, you would be better off buying a true air compressor designed for automotive service.
