I would add:
The external "exciting" circuitry on their larger voltage alternators is NOT rocket science. It's just a instrument cluster bulb placed inline between ignition switch "on" and that terminal on the internal regulator. It's nice to have a warning light, amp/ volt gauge or not.
My experience with the pulleys is that you rattle off the pulley from your GRD generator and rattle it on your alternator. They fit.
"Leaking" regulators are for real. They WILL kill a battery quickly. Personally, since the external self-exciting circuit is so simple I'd always want to use that. No "self-exciters" for me.
