Howell TBI Conversion on Jeep CJ

This made my day. Smog legal and DONE. Customer says it runs really well.
Only issue seems to be that exhaust heat kills TPS Sensors. He's on number four.

If TPS means throttle position sensor, I am trying to understand how that much heat can get into the intake. Is there some heat sinking after shut-down? The air filter looks inadequate.
If the exhaust is on the same side as the intake, I can see heat rising and causing damage. Maybe this application needs a timed to off cooling fan. Computer component stores sell these really good 12 volt fans. They are common in big computer towers. I bought two and was pleased to see they were made in Germany. The wires to the motors are about 32 gauge. Adjustable timers are available at the same component store.

Nikki, it appears that the paired intake/exhaust combo on this inline six allows heat fom the center exhaust header tubes to cook the TPS.
GM had plenty of problems with that, before. On one GM model V-6 FWD, the EGR was an inch from the TPS. GM came out with a bolt on shield and made it WORSE. Clearly, some kind of shielding is needed, though.
Yes, that wienie air cleaner has to go.
Driveability has skyrocketed. He four-wheels at altitude with no problems.
I was so excited I wanted to go home and start making adaptors for my stuff. The Howell kit is $1100.
I'd certainly try adapting my own version, first.

Re: Howell TBI Conversion on Jeep CJ

Heat shielding is a lesser understood thingee. Heat shielding can work, both ways. The thing that makes the difference is cooling. I think Datsun had a silly looking fan on the right side of an engine to patch over an over-heat situation. The fan worked well, but talk about an ugly patch.
!940 Fords have a few design flaws that have given this model a well deserved over-heating reputation. I have tried to include as many changes as I could think of to mitigate this situation. The amount of densely packed modifications may be a threat to air movement and cooling. I have a plan.
I am very much in favour of EFI. These old Binders come to life with EFI. the right amount of fuel, on time, all of the time. GM cars with TBI are an easy adapt to just about any air-pump (engine). While TBI is not the best of the best, it sure beats a carburetor.
Since I am in this anyway, I might as well say 12 volts and negative ground and see who takes the bait.

I remember the Datsun fan! It was hilarious! Z cars if I remember...?
I can guarantee that I will try a GRD or IHC OHV TBI retrofit...
12v, of course.
I'll forecast a Earth magnetic pole reversal while I'm at it: February 7th, 2020.
