Why the obsesion with a push button?

Ok, this will likely be more controversial than Trump.
What is the obsession with "push button" ignition? I don't see the advantage in the new cars that have it, and the old stuff just looks silly with it.
I see in hot rod catalogs "kits" and many just replace the key with an industrial button switch, but never do I see an advantage.
From a mfg stand point it is likely cheaper to mfg a bunch of "fobs" with their own distinct code than a bunch of keys which have a limited number of combinations, but it has been proven to be no more secure than the old key switch.
So why the obsession with retro-fitting it to older cars?

CB, I pretty much hate the freaking button.
It has no place in an "old timey" vehicle unless EVERYTHING is updated.
Computers have on buttons.
Real cars have ignition switches. And f@@king KEYS.

Some of us are old enough to remember when vehicles had push button starting in the early 1950s.

Mr. Goff, this is different.
It looks like a headlamp ring around that BUTTON on a new car.

Not talking about the floor mounted or dash mounted starter button, but the "keyless" ign button found in new cars and being retro fitted to old ones.
edit: Both my K's and all my heavy trucks have a push button starter, It keeps the two functions separate and allows the failure of one not to effect the other.

I knew what you were talking about. Just that the first thing comes to mind when they talk about push button starting to me is the old style. Turn ignition key on, pull choke, push starter button.

Push to start. No key anywhere on this dash. The button is a reproduction of the OEM. http://www.vintageautogarage.com/1940-F ... 1500-b.htm

I have two late models with the push button start. I actually like it. Just keep the doodad in your pocket and push the button. I never did like keys dangling on the dash/steering column, which is why all my car keys are on separate rings, each with just one key.

At the rate things are going, no one will know how to use a set of lock-picks, and our old trucks will be safe from theft, while the new ones are being hacked!!!
At one time I was fairly good at picking automotive locks, you would be surprised how may people would drop off their cars in front of the shop door and not leave the key. One Battery distributor was famous for their drivers dropping the trucks off and not leaving a key, the company must have told them they were responsible for the inventory within, but it add at least 1/2 an hr to the repair, I said I was good, not fast!

Re: Why the obsesion with a push button?

I guess I get tired of the STRETCH. By that I mean how many decades of vehicles I'm supposed to know how to fix. I am STRETCHED to the limit.
It's at about 50 years, now. Just ridiculous.
Every car and truck used to have a key and locking ignition switch. Everyone knew the drill.
Now "Reprogramming" (keys, key fobs, PCMs) is such a big business. The problem is that each manufacturer has its own system. We own the Ford IDS system. We have to pay for a yearly subscription to have access to Ford factory computer programming information.
Imagine maintaining several makes worth? No shop I know has them all.
A good analogy might be a Motor's Manual circa 1950. It really did cover a lot. Get up to late 1970s/ 1980s emissions and the beginning of computers and that one book becomes a WALL of books.
Get into about year 2000 and that wall of books is now a library.
Here in 2017 and it's a library for each make, all on computer.
BTW..I don't mean a library for each make going back to the beginning...I mean a library just for each make's "current series" or style.
