What A Nightmare Looks Like

In my shop today is this 2005 Nissan Altima. The reason for the visit is a hard code p1444 purge flow problem. "Purge" refers to modern evaporative emissions system purge valve. It's the device that controls how much fuel vapor is drawn off the vapor cannister/ fuel tank vapor storage. Obviously smog-related and obviously a big problem for anyone wanting to smog their car.
We tried the usual go-arounds and they did not work. Darn.
Found a Nissan TSB for wiring loom chafing near left wiper pivot. Oh boy! Removed engine room major
wiring loom cover to find wiring loom melted to itself in several areas. A really bad day in repairland!
In the meantime customer finally confessed to installing bigger fuse for left headlamp...so we have two possible reasons for melted wires. Cool!
Fast forward..checking continuity and power through the purge control valve back to computer (generally auto computers ground circuits NOT power them). It appears that melted loom wires imparted a current to the purge control ground circuit larger than what the engine computer could handle. Bad computer $1500ish.
We mechanics are BAD MEN. :)

Ouch, Been down that road, not exactly the same, but close. It all comes down to getting to the root of the problem. Glad to be away from it now. Even big trucks are getting like that, makes it hard to make a living with one.

Nothing like the smell of burning wires, in the morning.

Re: What A Nightmare Looks Like

close the hood, step back slowly,,,,,,,

I thought this was going to be about rats under the hood, my Mom had a Ferd Escort that a rat got in the engine compartment and ate All the insulation off the wires, Ferd had to put in a complete wiring harness

BRJ we had a customer that had a rat infested Ford Focus.
It was about $3000 that their insurance paid for repairs. Everyone, please put some rat poison under or around your cars!

Not me, I have too many animals around to want rat poison anywhere. But some of those animals will take care of any critters, about.

don't know what Ferd puts in their wiring that rats find so tasty, but I've heard of more than one Ferd owner this happened to

I agree, we live on wetlands and have been fighting rats for years, but to poison them risks other animals getting it,

had limited luck with traps, but they do learn,,,,,,

however, we did get some rats in a part of sub basement/storage where traps wouldn't work, I did put some poison in there knowing no pets would ever get in there, well wife accidentally let the dog in there, it ate a small amount of poison, we got her to the vet in time, she is fine, I threw the poison away,

Home Depot carries a non toxic to other animals rat poison that works on principle of gluten intolerance, I tried it, rats don't seem interested in it, so,,,,,,,,,,the fight goes on,

2001 Lincoln Navigator. Service Engine light on. Scan for codes.
This is the torrent of codes you can get from an older "modern" vehicle with multiple modules (computers). Obviously, a Lincoln Navigator is going to be much more complex than a Ranger.
Some of this stuff is crazy, even for me. "Two transmitters not programmed" refers to the fact that Ford requires two keys in order to program computer.
