Re: 1941 Mack

BRJ, my wife calls it _____junk. And she's right.
Until...
Until...
I put some of this and some of that together and it looks like an old truck. And it runs.
I rarely get nice, complete old vehicles. Nearly always pieces of something, only.
This newest Mack I had to pay double for: once for the carcass and again for the transport.
However, there is no place I know where you can find antique Mack trucks just sitting around. And I spend too much time looking NOT to know.
I'm jazzed to have it!
Now I have everything to make an ED (actually "DE" per Mack) pickup EXCEPT bed and rear fenders...bumpers...
I have: correct era Continental engine, bellhousing, clutch, transmission.
EE frame
SRW cast wheels and axles, 20" (for "DE")
E Series cab, front fenders, doors, windshield frame, headlamp buckets,
NICE grille, radiator...
Cab "cabinets" that go beneath the cab
E series seat
Mack E series parts and repair manuals.

Re: 1941 Mack

Mack parts showed up, today.
Richie Yost of San Bernadino hauled them in from Montana. Donor 1930s Mack truck appears to have been a firetruck. No way to know for sure.
I'm pleasantly surprised. Richie showed up out of the blue to help, seemingly. He runs the online antique Mack website and owns THREE Mack EDs. I'm impressed!
He also owns an original 1945 Mack salesman's spec book. Very cool!
Richie will be making ED pickup beds and fenders as well as casting some unobtanium Mack parts.

Outstanding!
Honestly, not your dimestore bus!
The styling, paint, condition is amazing!
It makes my 1938 Ford Gillig school bus look like a turd on wheels.

My wife thought that I could be very comfortable in that bus. She is beauty, and the bus is nice also.
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have

Re: 1941 Mack

Thanks, BRJ! My arms stretched all the way to Montana, this time!

Here are some more sober "Mack EE firetruck" facts and photos, this AM.
12' wheelbase. I measured it. 144"
20" wheels with some decent Goodyear rubber?
65 1/2" outside of tread front track.
33" wide frame.
Brake system looks intact if inoperable. A plus.
"Helms Grand Rapids, Michigan" bumper guards. Plating is about gone.
Steering works.
Suspension and axles are over the top HD.
Rear axle looks like a big shaggy black dog. Two speed, evidently.
26 1/2" centers on Continental engine mounting plate. How lucky will I get?

Re: 1941 Mack

Did some research today about ED vs. EE. The longest ED pickup wheelbase is 136 1/2 vs. 144" for Mack EE.
For now, I'm sticking with 144" wb. I have a rolling chassis. I'm not messing with it. I can't see sliding rear springs forward 7 1/2" just to match wb on a frame that is substantially higher and heavier than ED.
In other words, make an "EE" pickup. Turns out that ED only used 17" cast wheels. Incredibly rare. I only have 20" cast wheels. Proportionally, 20" cast wheels plus longer EE wheelbase works out in my book.
Mack Duallies, too.
So, I have a plan.
Turns out that Mack frame serial numbers during these years are stamped into the frame on the left side just behind the rear spring. Moving the rear crossmembers forward 7 1/2" will obliterate the Mack serial number when I have to cut off the rear of the frame.
Welcome to the 1941 Mack EE Pickup build thread. :)
