Yes, it is an impressive collection! I do not think I saw it all either.

Brian, I did mean jealous. Not so much in the strict Oxford definition of: a feeling of envious resentment of someone or their achievements, possessions, or perceived advantages; but rather in the more colloquial usage as a synonym of envious. So allow me to re-phrase, I am envious of your collection and good luck in assembling it. :D

I was having a little fun with your use of jealous.

Re: What Was YOUR First Tool Set?

Here area a few unusual tools that not very many person will have in their toolbox.
The VIBRA-TECH has an extendable wire that will vibrate when the device is placed against a rotating device, like a motor or engine. Slowly retract the wire and when the vibration stops, the side scale will indicate the rpm.
The SMITHS REVOLUTION COUNTER really counts the revolutions. The timer clock is automatically wound by activating the input shaft against a rotating motor or engine. At a chosen interval, withdraw the counter and the odometer will indicate the number of revolution for that time.
Note the indicated accuracy on these Starrett levels. I bought the 12 inch for $100 and the 18 inch was $200. The Canadian retail is just over $1000 each.
The edge scribers are self explanatory.

pardon my ignorance, but the edge scribers are NOT self explanatory to me, what do they do? why does it look like the 3/8" is much bigger then the 1/2"?

Re: What Was YOUR First Tool Set?

The edge scriber are designed to be dragged along the edge of a thin sheet of metal and leave a scratch line for the next function to follow.
As far as which size is which, it is all in how a person holds the scriber. If you want an eighth inch look for the 1/8 mark and use the knotch that looks like .125". I may post a picture tomorrow. It is very low tech and close enough for HVAC ducts.

Re: What Was YOUR First Tool Set?

I'd never heard of edge scribers, either. I assume these are used more in the shop while bending tin and not at the site?
My sister is a sheetmetal worker. I'll ask her about her experiences with them. Very cool!

More ancient tools to look at:

Did your sister change trades?
These scribers were often handed out like business cards. The trade supply wholesalers often had their business name stamped on the scriber.I may have several more, somewhere. I had maybe 20 at one time.

Re: What Was YOUR First Tool Set?

tools are cool. my first set was a mish mash of used end wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. given to my by my father. I kept them in the trunk of my car. I too get some tools on ebay. I read articles about doing different things with specialty tools, and on occasion have seen the need and looked for what ever the tool is to purchase. having the proper tool to do a job is a must.
