disappearing mail boxes?

It has been going on for years, long before the current notice of it. They are fast going the way of the pay phone, when was the last time you saw one of those, working or not?
I noticed it several years ago (may be 6-8?) when they started pulling them from truckstops. Used to be all truckstops had one, or close to it. Try driving an 18 wheeler and find a place to mail something? next to impossible. The places that do have them you can't get to and the places that you can, don't.
I'm sure it has accelerated in the recent times, but if it were not for the upcoming voting issue, I'm not sure it would rate much attention.
The mothballing of sorting machines are more of an issue, that slows things that are in the system.
I think the eye is focused on the wrong ball!

Cornbinder,
I feel for you on trying to find a place to drop off a letter or package when on the road. At the same time the focus needs to be on making the Post Office financially viable otherwise there will be no post office. And maybe that is OK to let it go private. The post office lost $8.8 Billion in Fiscal 2019. Not a political issue.

Re: disappearing mail boxes?

Private it is no solution, UPS will deliver a letter for between $23 and $32 depending on your discount. It is called United States Postal Service not United States Postal Company. Its mandate is to move all mail, whether or not it is profitable, they don't get to pick an choose what they will handle. Fed ex, UPS etc can set prices and choose what they offer. It is not a profit making operation, and never could be with its mandate.

Our Armed forces cost us a fortune and don't make a dime. Maybe we should privatize that too.

Think about how much mail you get in your mailbox compared to even 5 years ago. In fact I can't think of one thing I get in the mail that I need other than truck parts and my ballot. We vote by mail here.

Re: disappearing mail boxes?

I can't answer for the rest of the world. I have not seen any reduction in my mail received or sent. I am of the generation that still get paper bills and pay them through mail. My truck parts come through USPS, UPS , Fed-EX, and Speede Delivery Service.
I concede that the younger generation may pay for more with a credit/debt card and receive the bill electronically.
Even factoring in those that do more electronically, I don't see how you make the case that volume of mail has changed that much in the last decade. I'm sure the amount changed greatly 30-35 years ago when the world discovered the WWW, but is unrealistic to say the USPS has held onto everything from the 80's and now we have to deal with the change to electronics. For one the population grows as the use supposedly switches to other methods counteract each other.

Re: disappearing mail boxes?

More mail moving creates more income I believe...Also USPS in many cases is half the proce of UPS or FedEx. Does not need to be that way. I am sure there are a lot of ways to make the operation more efficient but if they are never forced to do so then it will never happen.
