Re: id distributor

I never saw numbers on the inside of a Prestolite dist.
What do you mean dui dist? An Ignitor? I don't recall saying they are hotter,I did say a hot coil really isn't necessary, unless it's a performance engine they're a waste of money. I also recommended a slightly hotter spark plug
I'd just set the timing to spec. and see how it runs then go from there.
In case you don't have them...
Timing TDC !!!! Time with #8 cylinder !!!!
Plug gap .030
Idle speed range 675-725 RPM
Firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
12 yrs.exp. in IH dealer parts dept.

you might check this link : http://preview.wisconsinhistory.org/Con ... Nav=N:1167

Look under "serial number lists" then under:

Re: id distributor

Why do you want to check the eng. SN? I don't know of anyway to check them for a mfr. date. (I do now,see below) The eng. SN on the LST you sent me is 1587269,it's written in (normal) right below the chassis #. I looked further down at the engine and the truck originally had a 345. I don't recall if you mentioned that before.

I doubt the WHS has what you're looking for though,I haven't found much for '80's truck at all there.

Googled "IH 392E" found this;

Not sure how to find the year codes, this was probably service related info which I never looked at.I'll have to do some research...
Leave to IH to make something simple difficult! A letter for the year!?

I'll be blunt on that distributor...for what you use the truck for it's a huge waste of money. For around 100 bucks you can get a Pertronix Ignitor that replaces the points in the Prestolite you have now. They work just fine,I sold quite a few back in the day. They have also been improved since then and I have seen only one complaint which they have apparently rectified. I think that would suit your needs and save you some bucks.

I Googled that DUI and it's really geared for performance engines the Scout nuts are using especially if they went to EFI. Then there's the water outlet issue, your truck has a totally different style than a Scout so the outlet supplied(?) with the thing may present you with another problem(?). I found info thru my search on other forums and people with Scouts still had issues with the dist. body clearing the outlet.

You could use the cash saved and get the carb. rebuilt or maybe an exchange unit if you don't feel up to the DIY challenge.

I 2nd that! Don't drink the HEI coolaid. HEI is overated, I repaired many over the years, and never found them to be better then other makes electonic's. The pick coil wires are prone to breaking (leaveing you stranded) and the electonics are placed in a hot, high voltage enviorment that is the oppsite of where you should place them for best life. The last complaint also applys to Pertornix.

Re: id distributor

Call Bill Hamilton at HAMITON FUEL INJECTION. He is in Washington State. He specialises in EFI and HEI for IHC. I'm sure he has some recommendations from his experience. I wonder if mechanics are the best source of what is best because no one ever comes in to say everything is working great, we only hear about the problems. this could give a distorted view. I have been left stranded , in the night, near Hope BC when the module in an HEI fried. Overall, the HEI is the best choice in town. They were made in the hundreds of millions and even at less than one tenth of one percent failure the number is big. In the bigger picture, it would be my first choice. The advance allowances may have to be changed for the new application. When used on a Ford Flathead, the advance must be restricted. Parts are so common and very affordable. Keep a spare module in the ashtray and you will never need it.
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have
