Why do you want to check the eng. SN? I don't know of anyway to check them for a mfr. date. (I do now,see below) The eng. SN on the LST you sent me is 1587269,it's written in (normal) right below the chassis #. I looked further down at the engine and the truck originally had a 345. I don't recall if you mentioned that before.
I doubt the WHS has what you're looking for though,I haven't found much for '80's truck at all there.
Googled "IH 392E" found this;

Leave to IH to make something simple difficult! A letter for the year!?
I'll be blunt on that distributor...for what you use the truck for it's a
huge waste of money. For around 100 bucks you can get a Pertronix Ignitor that replaces the points in the Prestolite you have now. They work just fine,I sold quite a few back in the day. They have also been improved since then and I have seen only one complaint which they have apparently rectified. I think that would suit your needs
and save you some bucks.
I Googled that DUI and it's really geared for performance engines the Scout nuts are using especially if they went to EFI. Then there's the water outlet issue,your truck has a totally different style than a Scout so the outlet supplied(?) with the thing may present you with another problem(?). I found info thru my search on other forums and people with Scouts still had issues with the dist. body clearing the outlet.
You could use the cash saved and get the carb. rebuilt or maybe an exchange unit if you don't feel up to the DIY challenge.
