Re: Good motor and tranny swap?

Have you ran the engine that is in the truck? If it is good and already in the truck why change it? A little body work to make a little clearance would be less costly than a new engine I would think. The 351W is a good engine, not exactly the most fuel efficient, but normally reliable.

As far as transmissions go you have the option of whatever was behind a 302 or 351W. C-6, AOD, T-5 Manual among others.

Good luck with your decision. I hope this helps some.

Re: Good motor and tranny swap?

Not really sure the direction you plan to go with your motor question but I added a 351W/T5 to a old Mustang. Used the same motor mounts. I had to fab a tranny mount but that was a C4-> T5 conversion. Not the motor.

If the existing 351W is shot, I'd get another one. I really like mine (mild cam/holley/long tube headers/...).

I used a 4.3 gm, now carbed along with a 700R4 transmission. Although my last hotrod had a ground pounding big block,,I wanted something that could get decent fuel mileage as I put large miles on considering the closest city to me is Duluth(180 miles) and most trips are into the Minneapolis area,,(350 Miles)

I agree with Ace, have you thought about International V8's. Granted it can be a little hard to get parts for some times unless you have a good parts guy, but those International valve covers sure look good under the hood. My KB-2 has a International 345 in it with Torqueflight 727 trans, it is however on a newer frame.

I want to use a 302 because first i am a ford person. the aftermarket suport for the windsor block is plentiful. they are not expensive to build and readily available.
I have a toploader 4 speed that i intend to use for the transmission.

My 2 cents, I understand that the ford 302 is the smallest americam V-8 made, I cannot find my motor book at the moment, but I have seen then in the IH 35 C series and it was a good fit. Good motor too.

Re: Good motor and tranny swap?

I am coming down to Back to the Fifties,,already registered. I was looking for a SMALL V8, specifically a 4.4L(267 Buick) when I came across my donor truck with its rebuilt engine for $150.00, Could not pass it up, I am not partial to any brand,,just like manure,,,it's all the same just different piles. My friend had a 267 in his '81 Buick Regal ,,,was a good engine and very fuel efficient, easy to dress up,,even paint it red.

I'll be at BTT50's too. I'm too registered and working hard to get my K1 ready.
