rear axle noise while shifting

Well yall helped with my front axle problem lets try the rear axle issue. Dana 44, 3.73 and powr lok. Never had the powr lok rebuilt but the bearings have been replaced about 10,000 miles ago.
The problem is when the torqueflite shifts from first to second at lower rpm I get a clunking/pinging noise in the rear. I have narrowed it down to the rear by taking the drive shaft off at the transmission and the truck shifts fine no noise. First question is should this pin be so loose?

thanks for the help,
duly

Nope! that is your noise and problem. Looks like time for a new carrier. It should be a firm hand press fit. In other words you should be able to push the pin in by hand, but there should be a little resistance.

The real test is if you can do a valve grind up the tailpipe on a long wheelbase "R" series. I've done a few OBGYN inspections in the cab.
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have

Re: rear axle noise while shifting

Pushing the pin in by hand is ok, but it seems I can get my whole fist in there, not good. I wondered why "things" were just falling out.

Thanks for the insight resident proctologist.
