Help Scout ID

Hello I am going to look at this scout plow truck in my area and would like to see if I can gather some info on it. I have a 56S110 but I have never messed with scouts before. Here are the pics I have on it. I don't have the engine size or anything else. I just saw it, wanted it, and the guy said I could come look at it on Saturday. He is asking $1500.00 as is and he has the title. I think that is a little more than I am willing to pay and it is hard to say just going by the pictures. Although he said the frame is good. What are the key week spots I will need to look for when I check her out? Thanks for any help or tips you can provide.

This is the description: For Sale: 1979 International Scout truck, automatic with plow. Plow works, manual angle plow. V-8 runs and drives. 4 wheel drive works. Body is in fair condition, interior is fair. Also have camper shell to fit truck, also included in price. Asking, $1,500.00.

Re: Help Scout ID

Hope someone else with scouts speaks up soon. Thing that I know about scouts is that they RUST! I can see bondo patches in the pictures. Check the entire body out, feel behind the patches if you can(probably rust through). The nicer thing is that there are more parts available for scouts than our trucks. A couple of friends have them and they really enjoy them. Price seems fair if all mechanical are good, and having the Back "shell" is great.
Just my opinion.

Re: Help Scout ID

Ditto Lloyd's comments, only thing negative I have ever heard was they rust easily. As for the price, if you have experience with snowplows, this one could come in handy, especially this year. I hear costs for used manual adjustment plows that are above $500. Along with a running truck, provided there are no issues there, I don't think the price is over the top. The nice thing about the model is it is a much more common item on eBay, implying that parts or donor trucks may be had, maybe even reasonably. Nothing says you can't dicker though....Good Luck! - Bob ;)

Re: Help Scout ID

I owned a '79 that I spec'd myself,1st brand new vehicle I ever bought.
They rot in many places, above rear wheel well, rockers, bottom of doors and cowl corners to name a few. Good news is you can get new body parts from a number of the Light Line dealers.

The one in the pic is a Scout Terra which is a "pick-up" and has a 118" WB vs. the 100" of a regular Scout and is the sister to the full top Traveler.
The engine is either a 304 or 345,Trans. is the Chrysler A727 Torqueflite, one of the best 3spd auto's ever made. The transfer case is very likely the Dana 20 2spd. (Hi & Lo range) axles are probably Dana 44's.
So parts wise I'd say it's 10 times easier than your S110 to find what you want.

There should be a line setting ticket laminated to the inside of the glove box door along with some other decals for the TC & locking hubs.If it's not they used a scraper to remove it,that's the only way.

Irish Mike has the MT-130 parts manual in his library and I checked,it's new enough to cover this one.
To verify the year check the chassis number as '78-'79 used the same grille.
From the 3 letters in the middle...
HGD 1xxxx = 1978
JGD 1xxxx = 1979

Here's a link for a price guide @ Super Scout Specialists;

No idea how current it is.

IMO this one is probably worth the asking price if the plow works and the drive train is good. Check Epay and or Google to see what people are asking for a like Scout.

Take a look...

Re: Help Scout ID

This is great information! Thanks for the help and I will see if a little research can drive the price down when I find the common rust spots.

Re: Help Scout ID

That looks like it might be a "Terra" model with a longer wheelbase and a half cab? No expert on Scouts myself, but ditto on the rust and from the first pic, looks like that one has its share.

Hate to send you somewhere else, but you might try asking over at Binder Planet. They trend heavily toward the Scouts and you'll probably find lots of advice there.

Good luck

Re: Help Scout ID

It's definitely a Terra,I drove 2 as a work truck for years. I was also a Fleet parts rep. for a time, which was nice not being stuck in the parts dept. all day.

Re: Help Scout ID

Well I made plans with the guy to go look at it tomorrow morning. I will see if I can get it a little cheaper, my wife does not seem to understand that I am not buying "another toy" I am buying a useful piece of equipment to plow our 1/2 mile driveway. Geeze, why else would I buy a 35 year old vehicle, to put it work that's why? I guess it doesn't help that I have just dumped 2500 bones in my S110's engine to get it rebuilt. Ugh, I am a glutton for punishment! I will let everyone know how I make out this weekend!

Re: Help Scout ID

You need to 'splain to her that it would be a benefit, with a driveway that long for your health, plus it has 4wd so if the roads are bad you can still get somewhere if need be.
