Re: 76' 1700 4x4 - Army
Hi,
I've been following this discussion with interest as I bought the same front axle to convert my '69 Loadstar 1700 to 4wd. For my situation I decided to keep the gas 392 v8 and keep the 7.17 ratios in my front and rear axles and hopefully find some larger diameter 22.5 tires. However I do have an aux transmission I intend to install between the trans and transfer case with a .73 overdrive which should help some.
But I do have a question - my axle has the same front cover as shown but why does it have two fill holes, one on each side of the ring gear and apparently one slightly higher than the other?
Because the front axle is not used much and never for highway use (I have locking hubs), should I fill the axle using the higher fill plug on the left?
I apologize if I hijacked the conversation, but just thought I'd share my plans to overcome the low r&p ratios.
