Re: 1850 Repower

Thanks Dean: Yea, I stayed up a little to late last night researching after I made that post and what I found out was not to flattering. Not the greatest engines out there, I hear the 550 idled on 4 cylinders and jumped up to 8 when you steeped on it, the early version of displacement on demand. I guess I will stick with my original plan to go with the 466. In the mean time I have some broken rear springs, so we are going to convert over to the newer type spring units and then it's on to the engine swap. I have to pick up a gantry crane first, I don't think my little automotive engine hoist is going to cut it! LOL

My dad had experience driving DV-550s. Hated 'em. Said the bank that cut out at idle was the side that gave problems.

Re: 1850 Repower

I would put in a DTA360 before I would put in a DV550. The 360 replaced the 550 in IH trucks. Lots of them were put in school busses.

Lots of older school busses out our way that came with the DT466.

Re: 1850 Repower

With spring coming it's time to get back on the Loadstar. Today I picked up a donor truck, I'm kind of excited about it, but I am not happy about having another truck in the yard. Anyway, it has a DT-466 mechanical engine with an Eaton 6 speed manual trans, with only 90 thousand miles. The truck is a 1991 international 4900, it was a town truck and the cab is pretty well rusted out but the dump body is in better shape than the one on the Loadstar. Also I need to replace the rear springs and it looks like the springs from the 4900 will work with a little fabrication. I still need to get the truck home, it needs an air distribution valve to have full breaking ability and I have to get it insured. Hopefully within the next couple of days I can get her home and start tearing it down. Iv also played with the idea of just switching cabs, not sure how practical that would be. At first the 4900 looked like it was in better shape than the Loadstar and I was thinking maybe I'd be better off using the 4900, but on closer inspection that did not turn out to be the case. The Loadstar's cab and frame are really clean, I'll get some pictures, or video up as soon as I have some.

Re: 1850 Repower

We finally got the old girl home! It was quite a night, I'm starting to see a pattern here! LOL I say in the video below that we are going to put the engine from the 4900 into the Loadstar, but I'm not totally convinced that is the best decision. I need to do a thorough evaluation of the 4900 to determine just what would be more work, changing motors and transmissions, or fixing the 4900.

Re: 1850 Repower

Well it looks like I've gotten myself into another pickle. When I was buying the 4900 I was only concerned with the engine and transmission, so I did'nt pay a lot of attention to the cab. But it looks like just putting the 4900 on the road would be a lot less work than repowering the Loadstar. When we were giving the 4900 a good going over we decided we liked the heavier chassis and dump body, we considered installing the engine, transmission, rear end and dump body on the Loadstar, but then we thought why not just switch cabs! But on closer inspection the 4900 cab is not that bad, it's worse than the Loadstar cab for sure, but not bad enough to warrant switching it out. So at this point we have decided to just fix up the 4900, we think that would be the quickest way to getting a usable truck. I jumped on the 4900 because take out engines with similar miles on them were running around 4500.00 and up and I got the whole truck for much less than that.

Re: 1850 Repower

I like the Loadstar looks better than the 4900 and putting the 466 in the LS would be really cool, but if function over fashion is top priority, fixing up the 4900 would be a whole lot easier. Even if it came to replacing the cab with another, it would still be easier.
