Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Hello and welcome to the site, sorry I am a bit late with the welcome. I just wanted to drop in and tell you I do have some info in the Gangster IH on-line library, there is a link below. It is free to use, I do continue to add more as i can. Health and time permiting. I still have many items I have not got to load in yet, but will be happy to help if I can. I may have a few small parts around to, call or email. Again welcome and a great looking truck, Mike

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Ordered a parts manual for the CO-1800 and a service manual for the DT466 from binder books, should be here this week.

We got the DT466 completely torn down, everything has been bagged and labeled. Only smashed one finger lifting out the crank.
Everything should be able to get hot tanked and checked hopefully next week.
Most of it looked okay, bearings were good, crank was good, cylinders still had a hone.
Being as I have no idea of what the condition was when it was pulled and it had been sitting outside I think it best to have everything checked.
Might be able to have it rebuilt by June, then the fun begins.

Anyone know where I can buy the blue paint for the engine? I've looked online and can find red, but not the original IH Blue for diesel engines.

Thanks,
Mick

Mick,
Here is a link to an engine parts listing that shows a lot of the different in parts used in different years.
http://www.thedieselstop.com/faq/9497fa ... eGuide.pdf
The blue spray paint is listed as CHSP29037. I googled that and got no hits except this guide. Maybe the part number has changed. I would think any Navistar dealer would have it, but I haven't checked.

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Okay, I called the local dealer, then did some more looking online. It looks like the correct part number is either CHASP29027 or CHASP29037. Both numbers get several hits. Super Scout Specialists has the 027 and says it's for Nissan diesel Scouts. Does anyone know if the SD33's were painted the same color as the DT series diesels?

When you start looking for engine parts pay attention to the engine serial number!

Can't help on the paint, don't recall what either engs. color was.

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Dean thanks for the parts list and paint numbers. I had looked at the paint for the Scout diesels and it seems to be a bit grayer and darker than what was originally on this motor. I've been taking a wire wheel to the block to get most of the oil/dirt/crude off and it was resprayed beige at one point, under that is blue and then there is what I believe to be a reddish primer. Would like to get everything repainted with the correct blue. Maybe I'll just buy a can of each and see. Definitely need to get it all at least somewhat protected from the salt. Last years salt exposure at the flats is still causing rusting issues. Been leaning towards a complete stripping down to the frame to get everything completely coated and protected before she heads back onto the salt.

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Local IH/Navistar dealer had three cans of the old blue color for engines, CHASP29027. $20 for three of them isn't bad compared to what some are charging. Will have to see how it looks once I get a small part all cleaned up and ready to paint. Would anyone suggest using as high temp primer first?

Thanks,
Mick

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

I used high temp engine paint, but I've seen several convincing arguments that the exterior of the block does not get any warmer than your coolant, or oil temp. Meaning that the exterior of your engine should not exceed 200-250 degrees F. The only problem would be in areas near exhaust headers or in your case the turbo which will reach a much higher temp. I've seen several N/A engines painted with the same color as the body and sprayed at the same time with good results that seem to hold up well. I'm sure someone with more experience will be along to confirm or deny my take on the subject shortly.

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

Personally I'd use primer, especially if there are any areas of bare metal exposed. Any cast metal is porous,at least near the surface which can have adverse affects on/with paint. It will also give a more uniform appearance and with only 3 cans it can make a difference.

Besides the pn CHASP29027 is there an IH/Navistar pn on the can? It may look something like 996123C91 and usually located near the bottom. If there is Google it and/or see if more can be ordered.
We stocked very little paint as it wasn't a big seller but would order it as long as they bought the case of 6 cans.

Re: 1970 Loadstar CO-1800

See if you can find the color of blue on the Federal Standard color chart.
Here is the link to it. http://www.colorserver.net/showpalette.asp?group=5&cmd=append

I have found a couple colors that way and even found some in spray cans. If you take a Federal Standard color number most any paint store should be able to mix it.
