Bit of a nubie question: can the hoist or lift be removed and the bed dropped down to the stock position? I expect some mounts would need to be fabricated?

Should be able to. The frame is the same as a truck of that size, all they essentially did was add the mounts for the "drive mechanism" of the hoist and the pivot for the bed.

yea, any of the pickup with hoist beds can be made "original" again, some hoists were put in by dealer, are designed for the truck and bolted nicely,

others are owner installed from whatever they found and can be welded in very badly, both are removable though,

I'd certainly take this one off, "original" dealer/factory mods the bed only sits up an inch or so, this looks owner installed,
