Re: 1939 School Bus

I was thinking that it had been used for a Bunk house in the past, those sure do look like bunks on both sides. Seal it up and use it for an "out of the weather" hunting cabin in the mountains.

For the outside, a "lipstick" restore would make it look ok for a 40 footer. There are probably parts on it that someone can use. Personally do not think it is worth as much as he wants by even 1/4.
It would certainly take lots of green to make it rehabbed/safe drivable.
My perspective from the peanut gallery.

If that conservative amount was spread over 10 years, that is $5,000 per year out of your disposable income. So, the POS gets finished and then what? There comes a time for the mercy rule where it is turned into re-bar. Take a picture and have the best one framed, for the out-house.

I don't think you need to be so harsh. It is one thing to say you don't think something is worth it, but you go beyond that.

To pay someone else to do the work yes $50,000 if not more....but for someone like myself that will never pay someone else to work on my trucks (short of machining work I do not have equipment for) the project would be very doable. The truck looks pretty bad, but the undercarriage looks fairly clean.....if you can look past the surface rust it is probably a fairly sound candidate to work on. How much more would this truck cost to do than any project? Anything getting a restoration will need brakes, engine work, paint, glass, interior, etc... The bus just needs a little more rust repair before those steps, but it is mostly flat metal. There are very, very few vehicle you could pay someone else to restore and not loose money on and I doubt any of the money makers would be Internationals. I know I will NEVER make any money on any of my cars or trucks.

I think $2000 is a little high, at least for me....but then a picture is hard to tell and try to find another one at any price.

I guess this might apply to your opinion of my opinion. See how it works? This is a forum where opinions happen. I respect your right to an opinion, however flawed.
Please post pictures of your bus project.

Brian

I think you are spot on $50k would not even go close to a proper restoration.

You could do a "Dulux" restoration for less (Dulux is a paint company)

We have a theory downunder that the cost for a proper full (not concourse) restoration is:

Small truck
$5-7k per metre
Larger trucks
$10-12k per metre

and that's if you do most of the work yourself.
