Re: TX 1952 L-120 Corps of Engineers

He said: We will be swapping the body onto a late model ford chassis with one of the cummins 6bt motors.
I am curious about the Ford / Cummins combination. Is this a Ford option engine? I usually associate Cummins with Ram trucks and Powerstroke V8 with Ford. Maybe this is one of those situations where different countries have different engines.
My friend uses 24 valve Cummins power in his custom built pickups. He prefers the "L" for the extra room ahead of the radiator and behind the grill for an intercooler.
The Cummins 24 valve just fits the pickups, no firewall cutting required.
My friend always builds the frames for his Cummins - Cornbinder pickups. He uses 6X2 steel tube with welded in crossmembers. The frame can be a simple ladder design with straight sides that are wider at the back and taper to the front.

Re: TX 1952 L-120 Corps of Engineers

Sorry for the lack of updates here, I forgot I made the post.

Thanks for posting that link dean.

The motor and mock up drivetrain are in the truck and we are in the process of fitting the cab, front clip, and bed.

We have decided to move the cab forward from what is shown in the below image. I just helped my dad pull the body off the chassis this evening so we can slide the ford mid chassis crossmember forward over the weekend.

Re: TX 1952 L-120 Corps of Engineers

We have been busy the past few weekends so progress has been slow. We did however manage to move the cab forward more and get the bed on the chassis so we can make its mounts.

Its not leveled in this image but its up there.

I finished fabricating the front cab mounts this evening. Just need to do the finish welds when the cab comes off again.

Fantastic looking truck, with the perfect mix of old, new, tough, and go anywhere utility!
Really cool. Love it! Great Job.

I like to see an old IHC pickup stand up on 4X4 axles. I think it shows respect for the breed. These IHC and Ford trucks were designed to do work while the significant others were good for Sunday School.
Looking good.

Re: TX 1952 L-120 Corps of Engineers

I finished up all of the heat exchanger mounting and pulled the cab last week to complete all of the metal work on it. I am not really happy with how far forward I had to push the intercooler but there was really no other option other than an air to water. I need to find a couple of the IH grill trim piece to cover the areas I had to cut out.

With the cab off I strengthened the firewall and mounted the hydroboost unit along with cutting the column and making its firewall support flange.

I also picked up a full set of the V code superduty leaf springs which we will be installing. Apparently they have a much softer spring rate and should bring the ride height down a bit. With how we had to mount the body I feel like its just too tall with the tires we are using.
