Re: Welcome!!!!

Hello everyone. I was a member of the old site and have been away for awhile. I own a 1946 K1 that has been in our family since my father purchased it in 1951. He bought it from a power company in northern Washington. During its travels, it drove from Wa to Minnesota, back to Wa, then to California, back to MN, and back to Wa currently. It is still is in original working condition, but hasn't been started for 6 years. I spent most of this morning attempting to wake her back up, but to no avail...

I would really appreciate any assistance. Here is what I've done so far:
Drained the gas and replaced with fresh, including lead added.
New 6 volt battery. The engine turns over but it doesn't appear to get a spark to the plugs.
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, connections to the coil have been cleaned. Points have been cleaned and gap is .018.
Power confirmed to the coil (-) terminal with a test light to ground.

After all this, still no spark.
I am also looking for a business to purchase OEM IHC parts.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Did you try a new coil?

Re: Welcome!!!!

Stop using lead, your engine does not need it and the lead is toxic.
I bought a 1973 IHC pickup for $50 because it would not start. Their son had "tuned" the engine and failed to gap the points. If the points never open, no spark.

Re: Welcome!!!!

Not wanting to steal the thread, but, my points seem to weld themselves together after about ten minutes of driving. I pop the cap, separate them and it fires right up. Thinking replacing them might help.?.
Might be something to check.

Re: Welcome!!!!

Mike's-
That's generally a symptom of a bad condenser or leaving the ignition switch in run position when the engine is not running. I would replace both the points and condenser.

Re: Welcome!!!!

Hello I'm a NYer with a 1955 IH R122. I picked it up Cheap and it's engine work was already done. I did have to pinch the rear brake lines to drive it home but boy was it worth it. It rides great, has a paint roller finish but that just adds to its old time looks.

Re: Welcome!!!!

Replacing the plugs, wires, points, etc. is always a good thing to do with a "new to me" truck.
Gives you a nice playing field knowing that all of that is done.

Playing field??? Go for the workshop.
I, like you, used that style Jeep mirrors on or R120. Our Jeep mirrors were mounted as far forward as I could get them, just ahead of the quarter vent window.
My son wants the YANKEE IH mirrors we have in stock. I have two sets, as it turns out.

Re: Welcome!!!!

My name is Tom and my boys and I are about to embark on restoration of a 1949 KB-2 and KB-3. We are new at this and will need plenty of guidance. One of my sons is a welder and the other is a computer geek. So this is going to be interesting. Would be nice if we had an old service manual and would appreciate any leads on how to purchase one. Thanks, Tom
