You guys are great, you were all correct, and that last photo was right where the number was, i cant believe i missed finding it. It's a non-tilt valve BLD240. I cant thank you all enough! Gaskets are in the mail. Now to locate an exhaust manifold...

No such thing as a BLD 240, could be a BD 240, a BG 240 an SD 240. BLD's are a medium truck engine and are much bigger and are easily recognized by the distributor being higher than the valve cover.

Re: 1947 KBS-5 in Fort Bragg, CA

oh yes, my mistake, BD240. So with all of the confusion out there about the color classifications, does the BD240 have a color designation like Black Diamond, or no? And, is there a way of determining a manufacture date from the number on the block? Mine says 409914. I am lucky to be the second owner of this truck, but unfortunately I know almost nothing of it's history. There was still grain in the cracks of the bed, and an old peeltop milwalkee beer can behind the seat. It may not be important, but i thought it would be good to know roughly the year the engine was switched. It doesnt have alot of miles on it either having been a farm truck, only a bit over 40,000. Wondering what some of the reasons could be why the first owner might have made the engine change. Just trying to put the pieces together, literally and figuratively!
