C120 4x4 1962? Ambulance

I am restoring a c120 4x4 panel truck. My insurance company calls it a van. I purchased it from the county fire department. It was purchased by the county in the 60s. My bill of sale from the county lists it as a 65 model but I believe it may be a 62 or 63. It may have been purchased for an ambulance. I have looked online but cannot find any images that looks like my truck. Serial number SB270092B. I have looked up the serial number online also but find conflicting years. Any info will be appreciated.

With the winch and 4wd, I doubt it was ever an ambulance. Could have been a "brush truck" for the fire dept, or any of may other municipal dept may have needed offroad capability

IHC trucks were the preferred vehicle by many of the custom aftermarket specialty vehicle builders. IHC was known to contract out modifications to these companies. School bus body builders are good examples. IHC was the preferred supplier of truck chassis to armoured car builders. The promise of Rugged Reliability was the attraction. IHC and Orrville were chosen by fire apparatus builders.
Unless you can find some evidence of the contract you may never find the information you are looking for.
In 1962 the Chicago Police Department ordered 67 of these modified panel trucks, similar to the one you have, for paddy wagons. The CPD paddy wagons had a custom raised roof.
Around this time, and in the early 1950s one of the preferred contractors to IHC was the Orrville Metal Specialty Company in Orrville, Ohio.. The Orrville Metal Specialty name has changed and here is a link to the company as it is today.
I have a Orrville Metal Specialty built three door crewcab, 1953- 1954.
If you ever feal the need to know just about everything there is about Old IHC company, you need to get one of the books by Fred W. Crisman.
ISBN#0-9700567-2-9 is the book identification number. It was published by Victory WW2Publishing Ltd. This number is for the soft cover book. If you want to spend considerably more money there is a hard cover available. Check the online book sellers. I have seen both the hard and soft cover books for very reasonable deals. I have both the hard and soft cover books. The newer soft cover has more information added at the end along with lots of colour pictures. Sadly, Fred Crismon came to the end of his life about 10 years ago.
I met Fred Crismon and attended a dinner where he spoke.

IHC were very early in the 4X4 truck option and may have been ahead of GM and Ford. NAPCO and COLEMAN were two after-market companies offering 4X4 modifications. There may be some information stamped on the front axle tube just to the right of the center section. If the information starts with BOM it is an early DANA axle. BOM is, bill of materials. If there is a BOM number there will be a record at DANA for all of the parts that went into the axle build. This will include the information of where the axle was sent. All of the part numbers and ratios will be with the BOM. This may make a rebuild or repair so much easier.

Let's just say it iwas an ambulance. That body style looks like it would make a great ambulance. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from it.

The front grill & headlights configuration indicate that your Travelall is a Model Year '61 or '62.
US Gov't purchased many panel Travelalls as Civil Defense vehicles also.
Post more photos of the vehicle, to include the interior.
What type of rear doors do you have? Tailgate or dual doors?

I suggest you order a LST (build sheet) for your truck from WHS, it only costs $20.

Re: C120 4x4 1962? Ambulance

I remember when my local ambulance company had a C series 4x4 ambulance. I have also seen quite a number of pictures of IH ambulances. I have never seen a Travelall ambulance in person or in pictures without side windows and a raised roof. I can't state for sure there weren't any built that way, it's just that it would not be the normal way ambulance conversions were done. Having had the experience of transporting some patients in a raised roof Cadillac ambulance, I can vouch for the reason that feature is important. I too would lean toward it being a CD rig or some other use. Interior configuration, or at least some clues as to what the interior configuration was originally, should provide more information on what the initial use was.

By the way, if it was a Civil Defense truck, the LST will show the purchaser as Federal Civil Defense Authority and Ship to should be Special Vehicle Equipment Company in Toledo, Ohio.

I used to own a 64 ambulance, it was a fun Travelall. With the concave grill an the quad headlights yours is a C series and according to the Wisconsin Historical Society it was made in 62. The year it was titled would be the year it was sold.
