Re: One thing leads to another

Update on the truck. I have now done several tests on the temperature gauge. I have done a continuity test on the cable , which seems to be good. I have earthed out the sending unit and the gauge did not move. I have put direct power from the battery to the gauge and the needle went straight up to hot, from this I'm assuming the gauge is working. I have run a new cable from the gauge to the sending unit, but still does not move the temperature needle. Im not sure, but from the these tests I'm assuming the sending unit is faulty. Im going to florida for a week in couple of weeks time, so i may be able to pick one up from Napa or similar.

I was hoping that i would be able to go for a few test drives over the weekend, however one thing leads to another. The battery was completely flat, like not even enough to turn the light on. Charged the battery over night. Had a few house hold chores this morning. Started the truck this afternoon and had a fuel leak from the fuel pump :biggrowl: one thing leads to another. Went to my parents for a BBQ, came back stripped the pump. Could not see a reason for the leak, reassembled and fitted back to the truck, no leak. No idea why. Now on 24hr call out for the next week, i will not be able to work on the truck for nearly 2 weeks. As always i will keep the updates coming. Luke

Re: One thing leads to another

Well i finally got to take the truck around the block a couple of times today. Eerrrrmmm, not sure what to think really. It still runs very hot. There was also quite a bit of popping from the exhaust and just seemed generally sluggish. I feel at a bit of a loss now. If i had the money i would just pay someone to rebuild the engine and transmission. Im not a mechanic and i just feel like I'm playing at it and getting nowhere fast. Off to Florida on Tuesday, so it will all be waiting for me when i get back. Luke

VERY HOT is not a number. How hot is very hot. Can you borrow or buy a laser temperature gun or maybe borrow your wife's meat temperature probe? I bought a RAYTECH. There are knock-off for under $20.
These temperature sensor guns are good for checking for heat in wiring. Heated wires is resistance you do not want, unless your are building an electric cooker.

Just a guess, but high temperature, sluggish acceleration and popping could point to late timing. I've seen it before.

Re: One thing leads to another

Apologies, not been on for a while. Thanks for everyone's input. I ordered a infra red thermostat gun, which turned up a few days go. Sooooo.......how hot is hot. After 10 minutes of idling the coolant measures in at 157.9F - 70C. The cylinder head is 184F - 84C. After zapping several things with the infra red gun the exhaust manifold in comes in at 402.9F - 206.4C.

Im unable to take the truck around the block this weekend to know what the temperatures would be then. However on a week Monday i will take the radiator out and drop it in to a place which specialises in radiator repairs. They can retest and coil if need be. Once i have that done, i will then be taking the truck to a local garage to get the timing checked and altered if need be. I will update when hopefully things maybe be running smoother and cooler. Once again thanks for help, info and pointers. Luke

Those temperatures may be too hot to touch, but they are not very hot for an engine. If that is as hot as the engine gets, you may need a thermostat to get the temperature up in 180f to 190f range. The exhaust should be very hot because there is fire inside.
A thermostat controls the low temperature not the high. A renewed radiator cannot be a bad idea. Having a professional look at your situation is a good idea.

Thanks for the info nikkinutshop, i think the engine will get hotter. I only had the truck running for 10 minutes. It does appear to get hotter when i have been driving the truck. Luke

Appears to get hotter? What is that hotter temperature? Use your new temperature gun to get a number. I would not be concerned with an engine temperature of 200f. 190f is good. Do yourself a big favor and talk to a mechanic.

All in the pipeline. The radiator will be coming out on Monday and taken to a radiator specialist for testing. Once i have that done, i will then be taking the truck to a local garage. Luke
