1964 C900 rear wheel hub /axle

Hello!

I'm having some trouble removing the outer hub from the rear drivers side axle. In the process of attempting to remove the hub, I ended up removing the whole axle with the hub and rear drum still attached. The main issues that I have are...

1. Getting the hub off of the axle? Just get a puller?

2. The wheel bearing was exposed and definitely got some dirt and gunk down in it.

3. The layered metal gasket (shim?) that sits between the inner hub and the axle housing got completely mangled and is definitely useless now. Any tips on where to find one / suitable replacements?

The truck is a 1964 IHC C900 and has the 5 x 4.5 inch hubs. I will try to get some pictures up later today to help better identify the hub assembly.

Updated to include some pictures of the hub assembly and the gasket (shim?) that was destroyed in the process.

Is it possible that the axle key is causing all the trouble?

Okay do you have a photo of the type of wheel puller you used? A wheel puller should bolt onto the hub via the lugs and then a large central screw rests against the axle, that applies pressure to press the hub off when you thread it in.

Re: 1964 C900 rear wheel hub /axle

I don't but the design was along the lines of a front wheel drive hub Puller. Similar to this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FDMWE0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RhcOAbT80SMP5.

Another problem I ran into was that I only have 2 studs adjacent to each other. The others are broken and need to be replaced.

Well, I'm in luck. I took it over to my local classic car auto shop and they pressed the hub off of the axle for me.

I'll be thinking twice next time about touching my drums / studs / axles.

One other question: was your drum not swedged onto your hub?

I’ll bet the drum worked its way off. This happened to one of my axles. Apparently the axle housing became deformed from a loose bearing, which allowed vertical play on the shaft. The drum and brakes probably started taking some of the vehicle weight and that was that. Something to check, anyhow.

The shop said that the studs were indeed swedged. But I was able to remove the drum white no issues. It separated from the hub work little effort. How would I check the able housing to make sure it isn't declined?

Re: 1964 C900 rear wheel hub /axle

Check the area where the wheel bearing cup fits into the axle housing. On mine it was elongated vertically (top side of the bearing). Normally that bearing should fit into the housing pretty tight. This one just fell out. For the meantime I have it shimmed pretty well, but I’m on the lookout for another axle just in case (actually I know of several but kinda need my truck to haul one home). I wasn’t the owner when it happened so I don’t know what caused it. Loose adjustment? Overloading? Failed bearing long ago?

Not saying this happened to yours but it would be good to check. All those broken lugs kind of suggest a different kind of failure though.

By the way, not sure how many machine shops you’ll find who can swage the drums. Most places I called had no idea what I was even talking about, all except for one old-timer with a back-alley shop who understood right away.

Re: 1964 C900 rear wheel hub /axle

I definitely will do before I reinstall it. I haven't decided what my plan is yet for the brakes, except that I know some upgrades are needed if I want to drive it regularly.

The broken lugs were a learning curve life lesson. I didn't know the left hand side had left handed threads and thought they were just stuck. Broke three before I decided to try going both ways and it popped right off...

I'm lucky in that regard! I have mechanic who specializes in classics and is both great and honest to boot. He mentioned it to me but let me know that they were able to be pressed off the hub no problem.
