Rear Axle Bearing Lubrication

I am in the process of a brake rebuild on my 1958 International A-120, 4x4, with RA10 rear axle. I replaced the bearings in the brake hubs and noticed they were very clean. My question is are these bearings lubricated with fluid from the rear end or do they need to be packed with grease? I'm assuming with the fluid from the rear end, but I wanted to make sure. The bearings were definitely not cheap.

I repacked mine. Didn't check the shop manual, though. :whistling2:

I don't think there would be enough spillover from the differential to lubricate them, though...
"How the heck did that happen?"

I worked in a shop where we ruined two sets of rear axle bearings thinking gear lube would be enough. Yes, grease them if they're greasable.

Grease can never hurt, if oil gets to the grease will dissolve, if not it will lube the bearings. On full floating rears I always smear with grease to protect the bearings until oil works its way to the hubs.

Re: Rear Axle Bearing Lubrication

I've always pack mine with grease before reinstalling them and the next time they are always clean from the rear end oil cleaning out the grease. It's the way my dad taught me and has served me well over the years.
