Thermostat woes

Hello friends, hope to get some info. I have a 1961 c-100 pickup with a BD-220 engine. I am in the restoration process and the NOS thermostat I bought from travelallparts doesn't fit into the block. It seems to be too long on the bottom. The water horn side fits perfectly. Is there a spacer that I am possibly missing, or do I have the wrong thermostat? Thanks.

Re: Thermostat woes

Since the thermostat doesn't seal anything you can use a modern Stant one. Place the "stove" part closest to the engine.
Stant thermostats come in any number of diameters. Choose the appropriate temp.
NOS thermostats are a DANGER. Older isn't better in tstats. You want the thing to open. To work.

Re: Thermostat woes

Some housings used a spacer ring in them, I just can't remember which this applies to. I 2nd the modern thermostat, no one is going to see inside to know if it is original or not. 180 or 192 deg, unless you are running original NOS alcohol anti-freeze :o in which case we need to talk!

Re: Thermostat woes

The Silver Diamonds used a smaller diameter thermostat, and a ring to hold the thermostat in the neck. For the Black Diamond (and BG) these should work. Rockhill #30138, Gates #33038, Stant Superstat #65478, NAPA THM191, O’Reilly (Murray) #3478.
