Oil Slinger Ring

Hi guys,

I have a question about an oil slinger that rides on the crankshaft of a BD240. It sits inside the timing cover. It seems as though it floats loose on the crank, which doesn't seem right to me. Only thing I can figure is that it gets pinched into place by the balancer, but I haven't installed the balancer yet (waiting on a cover gasket).
Are you guys familiar with this? I can't imagine it is supposed to float around loose in there...

Yeah the balancer butts up against it and pinches it between the gear and balancer. Think about it, if it didn't the balancer would be "loose" on the end of the crank, and that would be far worse than having that tin plate flopping around. Its job is to keep as much oil on the timing gears an off the front seal.
