BD240 Cyl Head Rod Question

So once again I am totally confused....
I noticed that in the water jacket on the tilt valve head (BD240) that there was what looked like a tube running through the length of the jacket. I moved it with a pick, and it broke... I was able to remove it in pieces. Once removed I could see that it is not a hollow tube, but a solid rod. I have no clue what this would be for. I have attached photos. Any ideas?
I hope I didn't cause myself more problems by messing with whatever this is....

Re: BD240 Cyl Head Rod Question

The rod is left over from the casting process. It is there to steady the core sand when the head was cast. After the casting process, the sand is shaken out of the head but there is no way to remove the rod, so it stays. It serves no purpose when the head is in use.

Cornbinder,

Thanks for the info! And thank goodness it wasn't important. I was worried.

Re: BD240 Cyl Head Rod Question

I learned a bit about casting in metal shop in school, back in the day. We only poured aluminum, but the same practices apply to iron.
I've pulled the rod out when I can get to them, but they don't cause a problem.
