Re: Engine paint

I'm not familiar with Valspar paint, so you should read the instructions. Real paint can be repaired by yourself. Powder coat, not so much. Then there is the lower cost of paint.

Re: Engine paint

Sorry,
I thought you mentioned Valspar in one of your posts. It is a enamel based paint that you can add hardener to it is sold at Tractor Supply here in the us and is reasonably priced. I have never used self etching primer. Can I use this with an enamel based paint?

Re: Engine paint

You are correct, I did mention Valspar and I have a gallon. This does not mean I know anything about it, so I have no suggestions on how to use it. I did spray several old IHC LB single cylinder engines in Harvester red Valspar and the finish was very acceptable. This was several years ago and the paint has not peeled off yet.

Re: Engine paint

Thought i would give another update, not posted anything for a while. Must of the engine has now been painted and i can now start getting some of the things back on. I have tried looking for the info on here, I'm sure i found some time ago, but can't now. What is the best oil to use for my truck? Its a B102, BD220 Straight 6. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Luke

Re: Engine paint

Just a good grade of 10-30 or similar. The motor oils of today are a far cry from the one of yesteryear. Base the weight on your weather conditions in your area. If it is cold a lot, a lower start number would be best, if Hot most of the time and higher start number would work fine. But 10-30 is a good mid temp oil. Not scientific, just my opinion.

Re: Engine paint

Against my better judgment, I am going to say, "I use 15/40 oil in everything except my Valkyrie Interstate." 15/40 worked well in our stock R120 - SD220 and 15/40 worked well in the 6.9 Diesel V8 that replaced the SD220. 15/40 is my first choice in the three Cummins "B" series engines we own. These engines have flat tappets and Cummins recommends 15/40.
The oil option in 2017 are many and just about any 2017 oils are better than anything that was available 60 plus years ago.
If the oil container says 'DETERGENT' this does not mean there is soap in the oil. It is unlikely a detergent oil will dislodge years of neglect and very suddenly and without warning block your engine lubrication passages.

Re: Engine paint

15-40 is also a good choice. As was stated, it is the recommended oil blend for diesels, and we drive big rigs and small in my son's company. They all get 15-40, but as I stated, the other will work.

Re: Engine paint

Because many of our older engines don't ventilate the crankcase as well as current engines, some folks use oil formulated for diesel engines. This oil has additional additives that can combat such adverse conditions. I used to use it in a '51 Studebaker V8 and still do so in an IH SV266 in a B112. However, since my background is in mechanical engineering with an interest in lubrication I may be more careful than some.
