1968 1500C

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased a 1968 IH 1500C dump truck to use around our farm. Looks like the dump bed came off an old deuce and a half and it needs a little work. Really excited about the truck it but it does need a fair amount of work. Had some questions about parts and pieces for the bigger chassis and where I might be able to find some replacement 1 piece wheels along with brake and suspension parts?

Thanks,
Grant

Your truck looks like a real workhorse! To get accurate answers, you'll probably have to give more detailed descriptions of what you're looking for. There really is no one-stop shop that has everything for all IH trucks.

I have a 1966 1500A model. The most useful thing I've gotten for it, was a line setting ticket from The Wisconsin Historical Society. I got mine in PDF form. That lets me expand the image to read it easier. It will let you know whatever parts your truck was built with.

I think I've found what type of wheels I'll need to replace the split rims that came on it, now I just need to find some in the budget. They are 19.5" with the 5 lug on 8" pattern that came on older Ford and Dodge motorhomes. Any one have some they'd be willing to part with or know where I can find some used ones? I saw some on wheelsnowinc.com but they look really pricey.

Re: 1968 1500C

Why not stick with the 20"? they don't look bad. 19.5 tend to be wide for low profile tires 22.5 would be the replacement for 20" tube types. But all in all, why not stick with what it has and invest in some decent tires rather than spend a ton of money on rims and still have to buy tires?
I can't see if they are lock-ring on RH-5's If they are the Firestone RH-5's than I can understand why you want to change, but look to narrow 22.5's rather than 19.5's. When you go from tube type to tubeless you add 2.5" to the rim diameter and one size to the tire. 7.5x 20" rubber is equivalent to 8.25x 22.5" tubeless

I'm not 100% what type of wheel are on the back but the fronts are the dreaded split rims that I'd like to replace. 22.5's would be great too, I'm not really picky but if someone had some 22.5" wheels they'd be willing to part with I'd give those a try. Thanks!

Don't confuse lock ring with RH-5 deg widowmakers. Take a picture of the wheels, esp the bead area and if possable inside and outside and we can findout what make and model rim you have. Lock ring wheels aren't bad.

Re: 1968 1500C

Welcome to the forum!
Hard to tell from here but they look like lock ring wheels on the front. The RH-5 wheels will have what looks like a small drop-center in them but it's really the lip that locks the two halves together. I'd try real hard to stick with 20" tube or 22.5" tubeless but I don't like to see lots of empty space in fenders. I bought a parts truck with 22.5"s with the same five-lug pattern and have seen a few other trucks with them so they're out there if you look.

Re: 1968 1500C

Here are a couple pictures of the wheels that are on it now, see what you guys think. I'm open to keep these if they are safe and if I can find some fairly inexpensive replacements.

Thanks again!

Re: 1968 1500C

Those sure look like Firestone RH-5's too me, I would be looking for replacements. It is my understanding that IHC never used them on their trucks, so wonder how those made it on yours?
