Re: Steering leakage

Ya know Luke, you might be able to source the parts on that side of the pond. If the sector shaft is 7/8" or 15/16" those were used by Willys/Jeep and I know there's a number of the WW2 jeeps in the UK,France and just about all Western Europe. They get the parts someplace so if you know anyone into the old military vehicles ask them. Or maybe one of the museums that restore and operate their own, like the tank museum in Bovington, the IWM etc.
If you have the 1-1/8" sector shaft Jeep didn't use that one but others did.

I made this list recently after the last guy looking for parts, might be useful(?).

FYI, Ross is part of TRW.

The other oil leaks could be just seals or gaskets, not difficult just a PITA to do. I've stopped drips by just snugging up bolts.
In case the fuel pump gasket is NG (common) here's some pn's
FPG6579 Napa
D27094 Victor
Should be easy to get even in the UK,fits 1000's of vehicles like the SBC for example.

Re: Steering leakage

WOW. thats some serious info you've given me there, thank you. I'll see how i go with just replacing the gasket on the steering box, if it still leaks then maybe it will be new seals and bearing etc. I bought some gasket sheets so im hoping i can sort most of them with that, but as you say PITA, I think i was just having a bit of a moment lying under the truck yesterday. got today and tomorrow off so hoping to seal some of them leaks up. thanks again. luke

Re: Steering leakage

Luke, I stumbled on a Jeep parts vendor in the UK. You may be able to get the parts you need there?

Re: Steering leakage

Well maybe it was too good to be true, it looks like the steering box leak is back. So im gonna have to order parts soon. So i have a few other leaks to take care of, one of which is the gear box. Where the linkages connect to the box i seem to have left and right movement and a slow trickle of oil coming out of it. I couldn't see any bushes in there but im probably wrong. Is there some sort of seal that may have gone?? I also have problems with the truck jumping out of 2nd gear and getting into 2nd gear would this be caused by the left to right movement?? Some of the teeth do look a little worn or damaged. Just thought i would try and sort it out in one go if the steering column has to come off. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Steering leakage

Lucas hub oil was suggested by a reputable steering box rebuilder to cut down on leaks. A lot of people back in the day drained the gear oil and replaced it with grease for the same reason, but I don't think grease is a good substitute.

You might try the Lucas oil first and then replace bushings if that doesn't work.

Re: Steering leakage

The shaft(s) does have a seal,it should be behind the lever in the 2nd pic.The ones I checked don't show a bushing though. Can't help more without knowing the trans. model (or code).

Re: Steering leakage

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately not had a lot of time to spend on the truck of late, on call this week. I'll try and get out this weekend to have a look at the steering box as i tightened up the bolts some more. There's a couple of numbers that i can see, not sure if these are the ones required to give you more info. 5183 R1 and 65164. The engine size is a BD220 with a 3 on a tree.

Re: Steering leakage

Probably a stupid question but...when i come to order the parts for the steering box i think i will get a new sector shaft as i have a bit of play on the steering, so the question is do i have to take the steering box apart or can i measure it without taking off and measure where the arrow is? any help would be greatly appreciated.
