Re: Start of 1210 Rebuild/Refurbish

Ok I will look into that. I have not broken down one of these engines before. Lots of 350s, some 390s and a few AMCs. Is there anything I can look at externally or as I move towards the crank that will be a give away as far as needing replacement? Or do I need to get technical and break out a micrometer to see difference in wear etc. Anything else I should look for? Like you said its on the stand so might as well do it now.

It is cam bearing not crank that have the problem. Crank are easly checked, cam you need to mic the bearing and the journal on the cam. Easyest to use a T gauge and an outside mic to check the bearing. The problem with them was delaminating, in other words, the bearing layers would separate, so you might get a visual clue that something is wrong by looking at them closely with the cam removed.

Good weekend of work. Blasted the frame just to scuff, not to white metal. Since I was using chassis saver, I just needed to abraid the surface and the product would do the rest. Then threw a coat of rust oleum over that to protect against UV since chassis saver does not and I like how it turned out. Also, got the bed masked and rhino lined (UPOL) and it turned out great as always. Did not get the block pulled. Watched too much march madness and madness it was! Might be slow for a few weeks here since work/life is catching up but I will continue to post as I knock things out.

Thanks Dean!,
It has been a fun one for me so far and glad with the progress I am making being away from my shop and most of my tools. I tried Chassis saver since it was recommended to me by a member on the BigMackTrucks forum. I also own a 61' B model and there are always guys trying new stuff on there. But at half the price of POR 15 with the same qualities very very happy with the results. I shot it out of a spray gun with a 1.4 tip. Also, the product is self leveling so it leaves a great finish. Only downside is it UV sensitive and will fade to a light gray when exposed. I coated it last with a rustoleum UV product so maybe that will work maybe it won't. Time will tell but since I've gone this far going to try and do it right, budget dependent of course. Hoping to get motor pulled soon. Weather is nice but life caught up for the next few weeks so have to devote time elsewhere. End goal is to have it back to DD status 1 JULY.

Update on Progress,
Body panel metal work complete and hinges replaced. Non-visible side of panels were chassis'saver'd to help with rust and look nice. Visible side of the engine compartment panels were rhino lined. Starting on the cab this week and then its off to the body shop for paint. Hoping to start re-assembly on 1 July and take the month to do that and be driving by august.

Cab and dash out today. Blast and metal work body this weekend then all parts go to the body shop for forest green metallic paint! Getting excited and ready for re-assembly. Anybody have experience with Painless wiring harness'. Super Scout Parts was not able to meet the timeline I need. they have a 90 day backlog on harness'.
