Re: Start of 1210 Rebuild/Refurbish

Fellas thanks for all the info. No LST on the back side of the glove box, just the remnants of the peeled away cardboard so I will be ordering one at some point. I know it will tell me everything but I enjoy pictures and hearing what yall think. Did some more break down today before the snow chased me in. Started tail lights, markers, badges and trim removal.

Question on trim, can you find the brackets that hold the trim on anywhere or is that a forgotten item?

PS: I'll start taking pictures that aren't &(#&(#^ upside down and sideways!

On the hood bracket support I know the rust out is common. Is there a replacement panel? I'm thinking its easier just to self fabricate.

Pretty shocking to me how much the window trim shrank in the corner. Anyone who owns a 1000 series is that normal. What does it look like stock?

Can anyone point me to a book/diagram/or literature that shows the body panel disassembly of this truck. I'm having trouble separating the front quarter panel from the inside splash /engine bay fender.

Also, requested LST from IH so I will post that when it comes in. More pics to follow tonight I've been working hard weather in Montana the last few weeks has been mild.

Front inner fender patches are available at Super Scout Specialists in Springfield, Ohio. They have the hood hinge captive nuts welded to them. A good product, but if you are a sheet metal mech, you could build these yourself.

The front fenders have a 'hidden' bolt. Open the door, look for a rubber plug in the A pillar, remove the plug. Then use a 9" extension on your ratchet to remove that bolt.
Also, remove the small panel at the base of the windshield, one per side. There are two bolts under there.
Also a bolt at the rocker panel, forward end extension.
Three or four bolts at the radiator support.

Buy a Factory Service Manual for your truck model and you will be well informed.

PoP,
Thanks for all the info. New realm for me usually I stick to C10s but I'm enjoying learning. Must say I thoroughly enjoying tearing apart this truck. As an engineer myself I am appreciating the construction of the IH's when compared to a GM or Ford body. Some of the thought and ingenuity that went into the construction is awesome to see and think about. I will be buying a manual. I know better than that but wanted to explore a bit first before turning to the text. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Ok fellas picture time! Spent most of last week tearing it apart and made decent progress. Got stalled on the bed as I had to take the time to cut some welds.

Re: Start of 1210 Rebuild/Refurbish

Ok yall got the pictures in the correct orientation this time. Things to come! Will be doing a compression test soon and will be blasting the bed. Yup you got is using the "dustless blaster"!! Can't wait to see how this tool works!

More info on build as I go through it in my head. Will be doing a double gas tank delete and moving to a square tank in the bed. All gas tank and neck holes will be filled in with sheet metal. Trim will be deleted as well. Honestly, traps too much dirt and rust and its a pain in the ass!!! Color choice is coming down to Chevy forest green with flat grey side graphics, panels etc. Debating putting a air inlet cutout in the hood. Thoughts? all opinions and ideas welcome. -B

Re: Start of 1210 Rebuild/Refurbish

When my daughter was a preschooler, she and I used to walk around our neighbourhood just for fun and exercise. There was a 1963 IHC similar to yours and it had been sitting on the street for months. I put my daughter in the back of the IH and in a few minutes the owner came out of the house to visit. He said their mechanic told his the cam had broken and he would take $50 for the truck. I paid and we signed the transfer paper. The seller went on to tell me his son had given the truck a tune up and it never started and ran again. I popped the distributor cap and had the seller try to start the engine. The rotor turned, but the points did not open. I adjusted the points a little and had the seller try again, the engine started instantly. Needless to say, the seller was not too pleased. The seller wanted to know what I had done. I told him it would cost him $50, he "F" bombed me a few times and then I drove the last three blocks home in my new to me IHC.

That's a great story NNS and a great deal! Most of everything is that way. People don't take the time to check easy stuff and then you get a good deal and they get mad when you turn a screw and drive off with it. There is risk on both sides. Thanks for sharing!

Ok yall results of compression test. Was happy until I got to the last two cylinders. Not bad but not great. Let me know what you guys think mechanically and were these engines tend to fail. Its a 392 w/4 barrel holley carb.

Plugs pulled and inspected, marvels mystery oil inserted into each cylinder before compression
Right Side: Cylinder 1(Front)/145, (2) 137, (3) 130, (4) 125
Left Side: Cylinder 1(Front)/145, (2) 140, (3) 135, (4) 140
