13 verses 17

I am trying to get info on my truck. I went to a directory with the vin and found out that it is supposed to be 17 digits long. I have checked mine twice and its only 13. I am assuming the serial number and the vin are the same thing. The serial # is 613105H626914.

I hope I am posting in the right section. My truck is a 1100A model and would that make a difference in the serial # length?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Some "vin's" can be as little as 5 or 6 digits. The 17 digit std didn't come into effect until the 80's sometime. your 13 digit is correct. Can't believe all you read on the net.

Re: 13 verses 17

IH didn't use a "VIN" until the 1981 model year, which then was mandated to be 17 digits.

Prior to that, the IH Serial Numbers were 13 digits, as yours is, which is correct.

Earlier trucks had shorter serial numbers as there was no set standard. Every manufacturer had their own system.

Lastly, your serial number or "VIN" doesn't tell you anything that you don't already know.
