I am trying to remove the front drum brakes on my trucks Dana 30 front axle. Have tried PB blaster, heating it with a torch and whacking it with a mallet but still no dice, also brakes are loosened all the way. Are the studs pressed into the drums? Are there any special tricks to getting them off? Was thinking of going the drum puller route next but have to find one that can work with big front axle hubs. They are really not rusted that badly so I'm surprised their fighting me, the rears came off easy as could be.Any help is appreciated!

Not that familiar with the newer trucks but I think that the studs are swedged into the drums. You may need to remove the nut holding the hubs on and then try pressing them off from there. Be careful to not warp them or bust the hub. Just my thoughts.

Firstly, your front axle should be a Dana 44 on an IH 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.

Secondly, I would think the drums are rusted to the hub as they are not swaged to the studs or otherwise retained.
Be sure you backed off the shoes and did not tighten them in error. Do the front drums rotate freely?
Apply a good penetrant and if that doesn't work, then use some heat and/or a drum puller could be utilized.

I have dealt with this problem at least 4 times and earned the T-shirt. AS mentioned before. Get a hold of a good puller (3 prong is best) and a good torch. Heat, beat and reposition puller. Some drums have small holes over hub area. If so, you can also use a metric self tapping screw that can also be used to help dismount drum. I forgot what size metric screw to use. Once drum is off, make sure to ream out lug holes with file or step up drill bit so this never happens again. Good Luck.

@1975IH200 Yes you are correct, it does have the Dana 44 front, my error. And yes, they rotate freely but will double check they are loosened all the way. Also, thank you for confirming they are not swaged, I was wondering about that.
I got a hold of a 3 prong puller so will give that at shot and see if that does the trick. Thanks!

Ok so the puller I have has no where the reach I need. The hub sticks out 8 7/8" off the face of the drum plus the drum so that's over 11", any suggestions for a puller that has that kind of reach over the hub?

Note: spoke with an IH guy and he recommended taking the hub assembly apart and taking the hub, drum and studs as one.

That is one way to do it.
Remove the hub/drum assembly and then separate them.

Harbor Freight sells a puller with a hydraulic cylinder as the puller.
I bet that would do it too.
